PC only works in safe mode

ok, have been told as it is over 3 years old it needs a service? will cost me £60 max as long as it does not need new drivers/parts

Even if it needs new drivers it shouldnt cost anything. Especially as all drivers are free from the net.

system restore does not work, have tried it and it keeps saying, not done

some acer desktops use f10 or f11 key for factory settings or google acer desktop recovery

Yep. disk errors means use chkdsk as dx said. This handy little program will take a considerable amount of time to run, but it will fix the errors on your Hard drive, If it cant fix them, it will lock them off and move any program out of the way of that part of the disk so it can run again.

no I do not have Norton, have spybot, AVG and MS essentials, will do the chkdsk again

once you have run chkdsk [via the last info I sent my computer etc]

 

you'll find the lappy will work ok.

ok, finally got F8 to work and did the chkdsk, it came back saying no corruption found, tried the repair you comp but that did nothing, still in safe mode

In safemode, go to run, type CMD and hit enter. In the next box type

 

 

chkdsk /r

 

The chkdsk program should take a while to run as it scans EVERYTHING about your hard drive. Unless you have a tiny hard drive, it takes a good while to run.

Ok. go to the search menu and find cmd. Right click and run as admin.

 

As was mentioned before, a FULL chkdsk will take a good while to do its full checks and fixes.

ok, this is what I got, File system is NTFS, cannot lock current drive

Cannot run because the volume is in use by another process

I closed everything down before doing it

Just booted my pc f8 started in safe mode have choice administer or user chose administer !

ok finally done the chkdsk/r and it did the run, came back with nothing showing, restarted comp but still is in safe mode

Might need to get a copy of windows and reinstall. Be much MUCH easier.

If you have a cd burner you could download a free Op system such as Ubutu and run it along side windows till you get sorted !
