I had a battle with a company who did some work i my garden. I asked them to quote to supply a JCB (digger) and driver and a lorry, and dig up my back garden, removing grass and plants, roots etc. They quoted me £350 on the phone and started the next day.

First thing they did was rip my garden tap of the garage wall!! They also missed a large number of roots which then had to be removed by hand.

I got their bill which came to a little over £600. I sent them a cheque for £350 stating that this was all the work was worth(they returned it), that the job was not completed to my satisfaction and it was what they quoted.

Several letters went back and forth they denied that they had quoted £350 stating it was an estimate. I then got several letters from a collection agency but I told them if they pursued the claim in court I was prepared to counter sue them for damages and any further correspondence should be directed to my family solicitor.

They finally accepted my cheque but I dont think I am on their Christmas card list.

My point is you have to stick to your guns and let them think you are unbending even when your not!

That is a very good lesson for everyone - don't pay up-front, don't bow to intimidation, and don't let them get away with any additions to the bill to which you have not agreed.

If they do try to intimidate, contact Trading Standards immediately.
