refurbished Ipad 3 for PC world, already going wrong

My Husband bought me last week a Ipad 3 as a present. It is the top spec model 64gb WiFi 3g. He bought if from PC world/curry's clearance warehouse. It was classed as refurbished. But was in mint as new condition. My husband got it for a good price. over £150 less than if had bought brand new in shop. It was sold with a 6 months warranty, I have had it less than a week and I am already starting to have problems. The Screen yesterday started flickering and stripes down screen. Then screen went black. I had to switch off ipad and switch it back on to get it working.

 

It has not happened again yet but I am concerned that it will. Today I have had problems charging it. I had to un plug and re plug in several times to get it to charge. I am going to contact PC world/curry's clearance ware house about the problems.

 

But question is if they sold it as refurbished and it was repaired before being sold to us. Who would have repaired it. Would it be there people or would they have sent it to apple to be repaired.

 

I was thinking of contacting apple directly concerning the problems. But im concerned that If PC world/ Curry's own people have opened it up to repair that they might have cut through any warranty stickers and voided any warranty with apple.

 

I have typed in my ipad 3 serial number on apples website and it says the ipad has a valid warranty that runs out next March. It also says it is eligible for apple care cover.

I had been wanting to take out apple care cover and don't mind paying £69 for 2 years extra cover. But again im concerned that If PC world/Curry's own people have repaired ipad that warranty might be void already and ill be wasting my money.

 

They did not say why it was refurbished they said it could be a ex display, or a un wanted customer return or it could have had a fault.

 

what do you think. Where do I stand regarding my warranty. Should I contact PC world/Curry's or go direct to apple. Will I be safe buying apple care cover.

 

Any advice would be much appreciated

You are fully covered by the Sale of Goods Act in that the item must be fit for its prupose and continue to be so for a reaonable period of time - at least a couple of years, I owuld say.

Don't take any nonsense from PCWorld. You shouod insist on a replacement and quickly.

If they are unable to provide you with one of siilar quality - menaing refurb, then their statutory duty wuld be to provide you with a new one.

 

If course, they will winge and want to repair it. Make sure that they don't take too lon - 14 days max.

Don't accept a refund unless they offer the price of a new one.

Refurbished doesn't necessarily always mean repaired either.

If it were repaired, it would likely have been sent to Apple.

Most likely though is that it was an opened unit that was returned, PC World did a factory reset and then re-sold it as refurbished.

 

Either way, as has been said you're covered fully under the Sales of Goods Act the same as if it had been purchased brand new, the '6 month warranty' they've given you is meaningless.

If you are having issues with it though, get on to them. You can't get the full enjoyment from your product if you're always worried about it going wrong.

Thanks for posting your query up on CAG.

 

Having read your post I can see why you may be anxious towards your product as it has started to show signs of a fault. The best thing I can advise is go back to the store and see what remedy they can offer you. As it was bought in a clearance store I am not 100% sure that a replacement may be available, however, if you speak to Apple and they have confirmed it does have a warranty, they often swap Apple products over if its developed a fault within a reasonable amount of time from purchase (just make sure you advise them of your receipt details).

 

I wouldn't worry too much about it because you have a lot of options available for this, give the first 2 a try and if you should experience any issue please email me at letusknow@knowhow.com and include your date of purchase, branch number and receipt number.

 

Also please copy a link of the CAG thread. (I'm losing track of who is who now after assisting so many)

I read your post about the iPad bought of currys pcworld clearance sale..

Sounds like a sale item on eBay Pcworld currys outlet store.. I have recently ordered a Grade A refurbished item from them.. I was little worried about what might I do if in case there is a problem as the warranty is just for six months (like your case)..

I was little but curious on what happened to your issue? How did you manage to solve it?

 

Is Apple store kind enough to replace or swap it for a fresh device? Or did you go for a refund option from the currys pcworld store?
