Hi guys,

This one has troubled me for some time and caused me quite a bit of distress in the past so thought it's about time to find out what was going on.

I had a loan with HBOS in 2002 for £1500. Credit care was added to it as a must have for the loan if I remember correctly (which I will be claiming for but that's a separate issue).

Anyway, after a period of paying the loan off over the course of a couple of years I did manage to miss a couple of payments. However the balance was coming down and by late 2005/early 2006 it was done to £550 owed. Then strange things started to happen.

I have a statement from a debt collection agency which has 7 payments of £186.12 being added to the account balance over a period of 6 months with the description BT Directories Direct Debit. I was paying £100 a month at the time to pay off the loan but the balance kept increasing. I then received threatening letters from about 3/4 different debt agencies claiming I owed BOS £1552.33! More than the original loan was in 2002.

After receiving the statement with the BT Directories payment on them I informed the debt collection agency of the mistake and have never heard anything since. Due to the distress it caused me I haven't pursued anything since but now I'm older and wiser I'm looking for answers.

Any ideas on what went on or who to contact? All looks a bit fraudulent to me, what do you think?

Cheers
