BT has more than tripled charges for former broadband customers who hold on to their email address.

Its Premium Mail is free for people who pay for BT broadband, but costs £1.60 a month for those with other providers — until this month

From 6th April, the monthly fee rose to £5, or £60 a year.

Many pay for the service to keep their BT email address, access to their inbox and contacts after moving away from the firm.

what email costs 60 a year? You can get an email on any random host site for less than £1 a month. Even unlimited space for less than 3 :/ BT really need to be reigned in.

Any advice i give is my own and is based solely on personal experience. If in any doubt about a situation , please contact a certified legal representative or debt counsellor..

If my advice helps you, click the star icon at the bottom of my post and feel free to say thanks

Blinking flip. You can buy your own domain for less than that and then hop around any free/paid webmail providers you like while keeping your own email address permanently.

This is quite typical of BT which, for some reason, thinks it is special.

After having endured BT's terrible service, laughable customer support and strange noises on the line for years I finally changed over to Virgin Media last week (I only need one Virgin account where I needed two BT accounts to run my home office) only to discover that they are charging this £5 a month to retain my email address.

For the record, BT also charges a punitive £31 per account (so in my case it is £62) for leaving for another supplier. This charge is for no apparent reason (I can understand charging for supplying a service, but charging for NOT supplying a service I cannot understand) so is effectively a punishment charge.

BTW, the strange noises on the line have stopped, and no longer will I have to endure hours on the phone to speak to moronic BT technical support who have never been able to resolve ANY of my technical problems over 19 years.

How do they charge for this if you have cancelled your account with them?

I am concerned as I switched last year but still kept my BT email address. Wasn't aware that I was paying for this. Is it via my new service provider?

If you feel I've helped then by all means click my star to the left...a simple "thank you" costs nothing! ;)
