Waiting days are days at the start of your claim for Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) for which you are not paid benefit.

New rules from 27 October 2014 increase the number of waiting days from three days to seven days if you’re making a new claim for JSA or ESA. This means you won’t get paid for the first seven days of your claim.

The increase in the number of waiting days doesn’t affect your entitlement to Housing Benefit during this period. You can still get Housing Benefit as if you’re getting JSA or ESA, even though you’re not being paid it.
