They say all politicians live on a different planet to the rest of us. Planet Westminster ! This current lot of Tories are mostly a lot of spoilt kids, who have grown up with the help of the bank of mum & dad. Some of the Labour MP's have a similar background and only pretend to be in touch with ordinary folk.

Humans are comfortable in a wrong belief that they are the most intelligent species. The universe is infinite in time and space and it is statistically impossible for there to be life on only one planet.

Nothing is statistically impossible. Statistics is not a way to determine what is or is not possible.

problem is most people think of humonoid life forms and i doubt it will be that, they also make the assumption that life will only appear on "earth like" planets

There are anaerobic life forms on earth so why not elsewhere??

although their may be huminoid life elsewhere i do not doubt that there is multiple other such life forms elsewhere

I know what you mean, but it's not really an "assumption" as such. It's more an example of a phenomenon called "looking where the light is". If you're walking back to your car in the dark, and when you get there you realise that somewhere along the way you dropped your keys, you're more likely to look under a streetlamp. This isn't because they keys are more likely to be there than anywhere else, it's just that these are the only places you're likely to find them.

 

We only know for a fact that life has appeared once, here on Earth. We therefore can't be sure what forms other life may take, nor indeed whether we'd even recognise it as life at all. So we look for the only things we know for sure can produce life - conditions like the ones we know for a fact did produce life. People in this field obviously acknowledge that other forms of life are possible, but without even the faintest idea what to look for, what's the point in searching?

You could argue that we are actually all 'aliens', although we evolved on earth, we all evolved from microbes that arrived from outer space.

Some of these civilizations may develop interstellar travel, a technology Earth is investigating even now (such as the 100 Year Starship).

 

Even at the slow pace of currently envisioned interstellar travel, the galaxy can be completely colonized in a few tens of millions of years.

 

According to this line of thinking, the Earth should already have been colonized, or at least visited. But no convincing evidence of this exists. Furthermore, no confirmed signs of intelligence elsewhere have been spotted, either in our galaxy or in the more than 80 billion other galaxies of the observable universe. Hence Fermi's question, "Where is everybody?"

 

 

There are flaws in this obviously and the page above goes into them, but I found it an interesting theory.
