ive had a water meter fitted a few months back..

.couple of weeks back wife showed me a wet patch on the kitchen floor,

assumed as it was behind fridge freezer that would be the cause.

Long story short

its now pretty bad and ive ruled out fridge freezer so that only left a very hard to access stop cock/water pipe.

..its housed at the very back of a right angle cupboard.

Crawled inside and blow me its leaking bad from it looks like from behind the stop cock.

..im now wondering as there was no leak before water meter was fitted

and there is most certainly a bad one now,

would the company who fitted the meter be liable.

Or is it a case of bad luck....

The amount of water that's leaked will have ruined the carcasses of the cupboards and most likely ruined the screed floor

...cupboards would need ripping out to allow the area to dry at a minimum.

any thoughts who is liable...no leak before meter...now a pretty major leak.

Hello there.

Something similar has happened to us. Is the water meter on your property or outside it please? My understanding is that this is important.

My best, HB

Its inside my Kitchen...the leak has caused major damage to the cupboards.

the water meter not the leak....where is it?

its possible that the stop cock which existed before where the water meter has now replaced

was turned down to reduce the water pressure into your house

with the meter now fitted, the pressure is somewhat greater.

if this is the case, then sadly, I don't think you'll get anywhere.

The water meter is located at the back of a kitchen cupboard in my kitchen...the meter is about 6 inches above the stop cock.

Stop cock was fully open before meter was installed.

Just to clarify..the meter hasn't replaced the stop cock, its still there.

there must have been 'something' where the water meter is now, that's what i'm saying.

no it did not replace your stop cock after it no ofcourse.

well as its obv not external

I think you have a goodcase to contact them and say hey you fitted this meter, now its leaking.

go for compensation too & don't let them fob you off to your insurance company either!

Sorry didn't read what you had asked properly...

The meter has replaced a length of pipe.

Had plumber out from Anglian Water...said that a nut was loose, put some ptfe tape around it and tighten it.

Spoke to customer service and they said there insurers would be in touch...can take up to 5 days though.

Said that bearing in mind I have 2 young children and the amount of water that has escaped,i don't want mould growing and the longer its left the more damage will be done.

So im guessing that as they mentioned there insurers...they will be admitting liability.

good well done great news.

can I just say I have pers experience of this type of situation with AW

watchout for their so called 'loss adjusters'

they'll wriggle and haggle, STICK by YOUR CLAIM.

don't get YOUR insurance co involved AT ALL I ANYWAY.

dont even tell them.

they'll ask you too REFUSE POINT BLANK.

they will cough and for the full amount of whatever you claim.

and they will pay for an independent assessor to value the damage too

[that'll be where they want you to get your house ins involved-again DONT

it can cost you dear in future premiums]

Thank you DX.

Well i've just phoned Anglian water asking for an update, its now been passed to their insurers.

Called the insurance company this morning asking what is the action plan bearing in mind ive damp walls with mould growing on them,a child who has a very wet cough and I have to take drugs to lower my immune system.

The answer was the lady dealing with it is in a meeting...then ive phoned back at midday and she is now on lunch...just phoned back at 1400hrs and they don't know who is dealing with it.:-x

Yes yes yes I fully admit im probably being inpatient and I should wait until they feel like contacting me,however im getting more cheesed off by the day.~~ And breathe~~

Thanks for the heads up about the loss adjuster...and no I wont be contacting my insurers, its not my fault the meter leaked so I have no intention of paying for it,as you rightly say the additional premiums etc.

The issue I have is when dealing with these people they don't seem to understand that ive had a large volume of water laying under my kitchen base units...this water has been sucked into and through an internal brick wall into my living room (right next to kids play area) and has made the wall so wet its lifted the wallpaper and left a mouldy wet to the touch wall.

Ive stated several times the kitchen base units need ripping out so the wall can be dried, before new base units (happy to re-use the doors and worktop) can be fitted...but alas it seems like its falling on deaf ears.

Ive now got to take my 6yr old to the doctors as he has a persistent wet cough...coincidence or not,my doctor sounded quite annoyed when I mentioned we had a mould issue in the living room.

Im of the opinion that the insurer needs to replace the base cupboards, have the wall dried both sides, replace the wallpaper (whole room as cant get same pattern nowadays) in front room and employ the trades persons to carry out work.

Is that how its done or do they just fob you off with a cheque...?

they should arrange everything through there system

replace units

dry walls the lot.

pers I would NOT accept a cheque.

it might pay you to get ofwat involved at this early stage

no harm in phoning them.

see what they recommend to do.

the health issue are serious

start waving your arms around about being rehomed or something.
