That would be fine.... if it came down to it, you could put Ubuntu on it which is a lighter OS

Also go to http://www.crucial.com/uk/systemscanner/ when you get it and we'll see if any of us techies have some spare ram sticks for it :p

note though that ms support for xp is supposed to end in april '14. (basically then no more security updates, product updates).

but, for 25£ maybe worth a punt. and, as mentioned could change/update the O/S later, and add a bit more ram which would help (2gb min overall). what is the processor and graphics card (if any).

if you're just doing internet, basic office stuff, basic gaming, xp is unlikely to be noticeably 'slow' in practice cf vista/7/8. and, as sillygirl says, in some cases might even be 'faster' as the latters might have more services/features to load and run.

I like the second one, unless it applies to all they sell, but it has a recovery partition which is equal to giving you a Windows disc valued at around £100.

You can always either add a second hard drive yourself, very easy, or clag in an external drive if you should need more storage.

can always add another 1gb yourself re the 99 one (2gb as a min is needed really imo), but, depending on which make/type 1 gb can cost around 15. can they not add another 1gb to it for say around a fiver?

not entirely clear whether a dedicated graphics card is included in either? seems like they are both onboard graphics? usually no probs with onboard re internet, streaming, basic gaming, office, etc. but, with onboard graphics, its usually better to have more ram (memory) as the onboard graphics chip also uses that.

MSEssentials is downloadable free anyway, and once installed replaces windows defender (so, looks like they'll be doing that for you).

presume the hard drives are SATA? not much real world difference cf. the older ATA interface re speed, but still prob better to have if possible.

Support for XP ends next year April 2014,must admit it been the best OS I ever used

Vista was the worse OS they ever made.....

W7/W8 There all the same to me,expect for the torch screen thingy

One problem im having with W8 64 bits on my desktop at the moment is

"Failure configuring Windows updates"

I followed the instruction on how to fix this problem but still get Failure configuring Windows updates :-x

Yet the same updates installed OK one one of my laptops with W8 64bits...

I'm serious thinking of reinstalling W7 64bits back on my desktop !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

saw that. but it didn't seem clear whether they came with a graphics card with its own chip/memory that slots into a PCIe slot on the motherboard, or whether the graphics chip is integrated in the motherboard chipset (ie 'onboard'). am thinking is 'onboard' as they don't specify otherwise? onboard is ok depending on use, as mentioned (and can still use/add a graphics card even if the motherboard has an integrated graphics chip). if that all makes sense? :)
