This may seem a bit odd so please bear with me.

Basically my grandad owned a piece of land 50/50 with his brother, they had a falling out and my grandad said you keep it and **** off kind of thing, But it would transpire that nothing was ever changed on paper, I believe grandads brother sold his half but the question remains about grandads half, Both have now passed away and this has only just come to light.

I think this stems from the 60's or 70's, On paper my late grandad still ownes half of the land so it should have been passed on to his siblings after his death as there was no will, is that right, Where can i check who owns what. Could it have been claimed by anyone as it was in limbo and unknown about for 30-40 years.

Erm..... I guess that until you can establish if there is land registered in your grand dad's name, you wont move any further with this.

I will ask ST if they have any suggestions :)

So in theory i should be able to ask 'can you tell me if a Mr Joe Bloggs owns a piece of land in Tinkerbell City'

Obviously i know my grandads name and i know the village where the land is but i don't know the actual plot so to speak.

I don't know about that, Tezza, you can only ask.

Maybe you could trace the sale of the land by the brother. I don't suppose he left a will that might be helpful?

Councils don't hold that sort of information

What's the village?

How 'roughish'? If you can pinpoint the postcode, the Land Registry can search by postcode alone and will return all titles held within that postcode

Hi, thanks for that advice, erm, i can pinpoint to within 2 miles ish lol, is there a fee for that search if not can you provide a link, I can always play around with the postcodes on searches to see what comes up

OK , go here:

http://www.doogal.co.uk/FindPostcode.php

Enter the name of the village in Address box

and choose an option from the Show box

That will give all the relevant postcodes which you can enter one by one in a Land registry search here:

http://eservices.landregistry.gov.uk/www/wps/portal/!ut/p/b1/04_Sj7SwMLcwsjQ3ttSP0I_KSyzLTE8syczPS8wB8aPM4o2NLEwMDU2MPCyMzcwNPE3d3I0NQ0yNDUyM9YNT8_RzoxwVAcin-UU!/

Potentially there could be dozens of postcodes and hundreds of registry title entries

That land registry link is to find a property, there isnt a property its just a piece of land eg a field ohh wait no i stand corrected, there is land listed on there, but at £6 a pop for guesswork could be rather expensive lol.

Does anyone know any genuinely free ancestry search sites

Compulsory registration (when land was sold) came into being in different parts of the country at different times, (roughly from 1964 onwards), before that it was only voluntary.

See here for when compulsory registration applied in each county:

http://www.landregistry.gov.uk/professional/guides/practice-guide-51

How can you be sure that having verbal agreement from your grandfather that your great uncle only sold half the land and not both halves?

It gets complicated lol, basically i can only tell you what i know, Im very much a middle man, Not a lot of the family knew about this until very recently and that was very much by accident, From what i have been told from fairly reliable sources the land was registered and part of it is still registered in my grandfathers name, he has been deceased over 25 years, I just want the proof of this and not go on 'what ive been told or hear say'

Initially you would only need the title registers ie £3 and only for titles for land not property, assuming, as I said, it's registered.in the first place..

Yes true, but if there are over 30 bits of land in the area it could be thats £90 +
