Hi,

I had applied for provisional licence to DVLA and I got my provisional licence. But till now I did not get my Passport back. It is already 1 month since I sent them the application.

The big mistake I have made is I did not keep the special return envelope. That does not mean that I should expect to loose my passport. I had to go on holiday and I missed that and had to cancel my flight tickets.

When I called DVLA they said that they have already dispatched to Royal Mail on 08/08/2011. But till now I have not received it.

I could see some the members also going through the same situation. But no conclusive solution. Could someone throw some lights on what would be my next step please.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Regards,

Iqbal

Hi iqbal

Welcome to CAG

The guys will be happy to advise as soon as they are available.

You could send a letter of complaint to the DVLA, Royal Mail. It is very unlikely that it's still in transit, but you never know. At some point you need to report your passport lost. Things like these need to be sent Special Delivery. Give it a few more days. Check the address with the DVLA. You could ask the Royal Mail if they've had any reports of missing passports at that particular delivery office.

Did you send it to them by special/recorded delivery?

I ask because recently I had to send personal documents including bank statements and my wage slips with my NI number to support my Husbands Pension Credit application, my Husband was all for sending everything in their return envelope but I refused to do so, I rang them expecting an argument but once I told them I was sending everything to them special delivery the immediate response was 'if you are sending your documents SD then thats the way we will return them', they did and all my documents were returned safetly.

It is very clear to me that government departments are well aware that they have to ensure the safe delivery of the personal information they send back but they will only do so if the owner of that information takes equal responsibility to ensure the safe arrival of documentation in the first place.

If you got the passport to them by secure means then they should have returned it to you the same way, if you didnt then I cant see why you can complain if they send it back to you the same way.

Personally I dont have a DL or passport but if I did there is no way on Gods earth that I would send that type of document through the post in the normal fashion and without phoning them to find out how the documents were being sent back to me.

I hope that you get the pasport back

Thank you very much for the valuable reply.

Yes I have sent it through Special Delivery. Even I have maintained the receipt with me.

Last week I had called them up and they said that they have initiated an enquiry with Royal Mail and it will take 10 working days to complete. I am not quite sure what would be the outcome of that enquiry. If they cant trace it will they reimburse all the money for new passport?

Thanks

Iqbal

Oh dear I had hoped that if you has sent your passport by special delivery then like other gov depts they would have to send it back the same way

seems I was wrong

from the yougov site

Return of your identity documents

DVLA will return your licence and identity documents separately, it cannot guarantee to return your identity documents by a set date. If you would like your identity documents returned by special delivery, include a stamped self-addressed special delivery envelope with your application. Keep a note of the serial number.

If you didnt do this then you may not have a leg to stand on when it comes to getting them to cough up for a new passport, but then thats the least of your worries - I would be more concerned about ID theft and fraud then worrying about my next holiday if that were me.

You really need to report your passport as stolen

Thanks again for the reply.

Yes, I have already reported to the police regarding my passport.

The fault was I did not go through their website before sending my passport. Nowhere in the application form they have mentioned about sending them an envelope. I had went through each and every word of application form. At least they should have mentioned to refer their website for further rules and procedure. But they didnt do it.

I am quite anxious about the things which are going to unfold. Hope everything goes well.
