cancer/no income

not sure if anyone can advise on this problem.my brother inlaw was living in Thailand for about 3 years and renting his house out , sadly he had to return in march this year to have radical surgery as he had tongue cancer. he has to live with his mother as he has no income to pay mortgage so house is still rented out , applied for i/b but has been turned down as owns house and they say he hasn't paid enough national insurance ?? he now has no money to live on and doesn't know what to do now , not sure if he can get DLA as is able to look after himself really . does anyone have any ideas what he can do , it's bad enough going through what he already has without having to sell his house as well . thanks

First advice, contact the citizens advice or national debt line. I'm not sure what the benefit situation is exactly.

national debt line is a great bet if CAB can't help... the national debt line is staffed entirely by professionals, and has a wider range of specialist debt advice. it's well worth PMing sequenci too.

Your local council has a welfare rights officer. Get him to go there immediately. They are experts on benefit entitlements and can even act on your behalf in appeals. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

I would go with macmillan, they are cancer specialists and deal with the financail implications of cancer on a daily basis.

looks like his hands are tied. as he was living abroad for 3 years and came home due to cancer and was not living in house at time he has hit a brick wall , if he gives the tenants notice and moves back in he has to wait 39 weeks to get his interest paid on mortgage , but can't cover mortgage till then . can't get I/B as not paid enough stamps and can't get DLA as he can dress himself and doesnt need help with cooking as can no longer swallow food ...

 

he may as well hit the pub eh if he could only afford it

update on this we have been told could probably get DLA and possibly mum could get carers allowance the welfare rights officer is going to meet with us to complete form

thanks emma it actually lifted his spirits when he heard , it's been difficult for him not being able to contribute to things like petrol back and forth from hospital during radiotherapy . he has even had to ask for money to buy his mum a bunch of flowers welfare rights officer way to go

Getting DLA particularly High Mob may mean you fit into one of the exempt categories.

You can get free:

* NHS prescriptions if you have a valid medical exemption certificate because you have:

- a permanent fistula (for example,caecostomy, colostomy, laryngostomyor ileostomy) requiring continuous surgical dressing or requiring an appliance

- a form of hypoadrenalism (for example, Addison's Disease) for which specific substitution therapy

is essential

- diabetes insipidus and other forms of hypopituitarism

- diabetes mellitus, except where treatment is by diet alone

- hypoparathyroidism

- myasthenia gravis

- myxoedema

- epilepsy requiring continuous anticonvulsive therapy

- you have a continuing physical disability which means you cannot go out without the help of another person.

 

If you suffer from one of the specified medical conditions, to obtain a Medical Exemption Certificate, you must complete application form FP92A , available from doctor's surgeries . You are required to complete parts 1 and 2 and your doctor (or an authorised member of the practice staff) is asked to sign to confirm the information given by you is correct.

 

 

If your DLA awards are new you may find that you are now entitled to Income Support as having Middle rate care will increase your disability premiums and therefore raise your applicable amount so it may be worth getting this checked at

my dad has cancer (terminal) hes still working and claims dla when u have cancer they will fast track it please let the dhss know go up and get the paperwork also get them to stamp the date on the front this is important as it will be backdated to this date xxx
