interested to know whether you tried a linux distro and still had the same prob? one doesnt even have to be installed, can just try from its cd.

As was suggested it is a hardware problem with power to the onboard graphics chip. Windows always starts up in the background, but nothing displayed. Have checked the monitor, so it not the screen having gone.

We could do with some help from you.

No they didn't and this will be the last labelled version. Windows 10 is free but rumour has it that in future, windows will be a subscription service.

I think the core OS will be free, but stuff like X Box Live, Office 365 etc will be buy in subscriptions similar to the Adobe Creative Cloud apps.

We could do with some help from you.

I've been using the Windows 10 tech preview for a while now ready to advise/support my clients and it's not actually too bad. It's certainly an improvement on 8/8.1! Technically this should be a "good" release on the alternating schedule of good/bad releases from MS!

That said, Linux and OS X win hands down every day

Ok, I've read the first page, not going to read the rest so sorry if this has already been solved.

Acers are terrible (especially for the old Aspire range) due to their bad thermal design. I used to buy and sell Acers with this exact problem.

The issue seems to be the same as the ones I used to fix, the ball solder joints on the graphics chip get too hot for the solder, and over time with much heating and cooling, the joints crack.

The screen will light up, but nothing will display. Usually pressing very hard on the "A" key on the keyboard (It's right above the chip) while turning it on will make something display.

If this is the case, it's repairable but won't last another couple of months before it happens again.

Agree, it is polished and slick, noticed no drivers for oneof my printers and my Bamboo graphics tablet, had to hunt for SB X-Fi drivers, otherwise it seems good. Not enough to tempt me from Ubuntu Studio though.

Ubuntu Studio is a great bit of kit for audio/video/graphics work, but it does suck the life out of older hardware unfortunately. Linux Mint is becoming a great "day-to-day" OS (he says, posting from a Mint Cinnamon desktop ...)

Plenty of other distros for older, and less powerful hardware. Elementary would work dandy on an AMD APU based system, for basic tasks.

Absolutely agree. The joy of linux is the number of flavours out there for people to try. I also provide tech support for a radio station that is entirely linux based, and uses everything from Pi's up to i7s

Linux makes good sense for media, Kdenlive and Openshot are capable for video, Lightworks runs native on Linux, and Ardour 3 is a capable DAW. they have even ported Jack to Windows...
