"Food crime" has reached unprecedented levels, a new report to be published on Thursday is expected to say.

Commissioned by the UK environment agency and health department, the report is understood to recommend the creation of a "food crime unit".

It draws on evidence from international police bodies Interpol and Europol.

They say that international gangs are diversifying - shifting from drug trafficking and armed robbery to illegal and fraudulent food trading.

The review of Britain's food supply chains was announced in response to the horsemeat fraud in 2013.

Very worrying !!

An appalling situation with food products but the fake alcohol trade has been going on for many years, deaths are occurring from ingestion of methanol and other adulterants regularly in the UK and the EU.

It used to be a problem seen only with imports but now more and more fake drinks are produced in the UK.

I am only a very occasionally drinker of alcohol, but I would never buy bottles of spirits from these independent small retailers in major towns/cities around the country. I can remember seeing many years ago a BBC programme following trading standards around and I think they said that they found fake alcohol in many of these small retailers.

As for fake food, I have probably eaten many kebabs that were supposed to be 100% lamb, but could have been donkey, horse etc. There was an article some time ago where different salami products were tested and they found many had meat from other animals, than were listed on the ingredients.

We could do with some help from you.

Government responds to Professor Chris Elliott's report into the food integrity and assurance of food supply networks

All of the recommendations in the Elliott report on food integrity and assurance of food supply networks have been accepted by the government, Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss announced today.

This includes the establishment of a new Food Crime Unit, which the Environment Secretary said would strengthen consumer confidence in Britain’s high quality food.

British food has a world renowned reputation and the government wants to strengthen this to ensure families have confidence in the food that they buy. Shoppers should be able to understand where their food comes from and be protected from food fraudsters.

The new Food Crime Unit is one of a number of improvements the government is taking to ensure consumers have absolute confidence in the produce they purchase.
