Hello,

Although I have been eligible to make use of the Motability Car Scheme for a long time, I have never used it, preferring to always buy my own cars. However my current car is now getting a little long in the tooth and problems are starting to appear. Therefore I am looking to join the Motability scheme for the first time.

I think I have worked out how the scheme works, however I have tried to find out the answers to a few questions from the Motability website, but cannot find the answers so am hoping the knowledgeable people here can help.

Firstly, can I specify the optional extras I would like fitting to the Motability Car?. Obviously I know I would have to pay for these if it is possible to specify them, but is there room for negotiation on the price of the optional extras? (The cost of the optional extras I would like actually exceed the Advanced Deposit cost),

I have a hoist to lift my wheelchair in/out of my current cars boot, could this be transferred to the Motability car, or do I have to buy a new one under the Motability Managed Adaptations scheme?

Can I use the car for work? I have business cover on my own car, is it possible to have this cover on the Motability car (as I attend the odd meeting at premises other than my normal place of work)?

If anyone has experience of the above questions and can answer them it would be appreciated.

With thanks

Ian

Hi cannot tell you about using your car for work purposes but the original idea for Mobility was to make it easier for people to work. I have had the same wheelchair hoist moved to the last 2 mobility cars I have had. Also my present car I had to have Bluetooth fitted as an optional extra (Vauxhall cheap skate's ).

I have just received a car. You can use it to go to work and back. You can not use it as a taxi or courier or a delivery vehicle for profit. As far as extra,s, shop around because like anything else they want your custom. Look out what car they try to lease you. Ford tried palming me one of with very heavy petrol consumption

All the best.

The first question you should be asking yourself is 'how certain are you that you will be guaranteed to get the enhanced rate of PIP for mobility when your turn comes to be re-assessed in just over 12 months time (re-assessment is to start in 2015)?

Depending on the certainty factor, will lead you to either going for a Motability car or buying your own.

we have a car on motability for our son. Play savvy with the car companies cause they can reduce extra options and change Advance payments. My advice is to stay away from small local dealerships as their profits are not negotiable. We are changing our car at moment and are in negotiation with two large companies ford and volkswagen both who seem to be deaperate for our business. Ford have agreed to add extras free of charge, Volkswagen have reduced the advanced payment.

And before anyone comments all extras and the reason for a higher advanced payment is for our son not to give us a "nicer" Car.

i never try contacting them by email but always phone as i find this gets a better service

We have had a motability car for 10 years and have found them and their service a godsend. In fact they are they only service that provides our son with a decent service

Thanks but it is not applicable as I don't get DLA/PIPs etc. I am on the war pensioners mobility allowance.

Hi Ian

I've had a motability car for the past 9 years now.

Yes you can specify as many optional extras as you need fitting. Depending on the car, some might have some you need already...others you will have to pay for. As far as I'm aware they don't count towards the original AP amount but are added on as "extras". My AP for my current car was £595 but the colour I wanted was £400 extra. This was not itemised on the bill that motability sent me so I'm assuming it's a discretionary thing. Of course that may vary from dealer to dealer...mine was from Ford.

Room for negotiation? not 100% sure on items you need for your disability needs but as I had been with Ford for 9 years they gave me my colour choice for £145 so yes for material things but you would really need to talk to your dealer for the other items. Dealers are trying to get as much Motability business as they can at the moment so it doesn't hurt to tell them you're not sure if it's within your price range and you'll need to think about it. You may find they offer you discounts then.

I don't see any reason why your hoist can't be fitted assuming it fits the car you are going for...it saves both them and yourself money but you would need to really check that with them.

Yes it's possible to have business cover for your motability car. I just looked at my insurance documents for you and it's fine but you MUST let them know beforehand.

Hope this helps you some.
