Hi to all

I have been legally parking my taxed, mot'd and insured vehicle on a public road which is a cul de sac as it has public access to a small wood where I walk my dog.

The residents (mostly retired people) have a dislike of people parking on their street

I've even suffered abuse shouted even though I'm simply going about my law abiding business

and there is public access at the end of it and the vehicles are legally parked and not restricting their access in any way.

Today I noticed new signs have been installed saying "ROAD USE HOUSEHOLDERS ONLY" they appear to be legit council signs,

there is no info of any fines/punishments should a non resident park on this public road or have any double/single yellow lines been painted.

Any ideas as to what my legal position is should I decide to park my vehicle for an hour while I walk my dog?.

Is this sign even legal as I see this as an infringement of my civil liberties I pay road tax,

this is a public road I should have every right to legally park on this road.

Your thoughts would be very welcome

I agree with Brig, the Highway Authority should know.

I rather suspect that if it is not a Private Road or subject to Resident parking charges, then the Notice is just so much waste metal.

id check with the council first,

if their are no enforcement signs of restrictions and no road markings ie yellow or double yellow lines then i would suspect that the residents have chipped in to buy the signs from the council

just because they live in the street does not give them the right to say who parks in the street unless a residents parking only scheme is in place, but then they would all need permits and guest permits

and their would have to be signs stating that fact

if the council did not put up those new signs, and I sincerely doubt that they did, then what they can do it to take them down after you report them. There is poetry in the world on occasion is there not.

If they are not council signs (and I doubt they are)

then you can also ask the council if the residents have planning permission for putting up these advertising signs.

They will then incur a charge of £300 for the permission to do so or a fine for not having permission if they are not removed, regardless whose land they are on.

This will probably get the busybodies who did this a frosty reception from their neighbours.

Pensioners really should get something to occupy themselves in the daytime rather than staring out of the window at parked cars and getting all heated up over it.

Really as a ''pensioner'' who makes a point of parking considerately, I find the sheer carelessness arrogance and often dangerous parking by ''younger'' drivers

disgusting.

From hard experience of living near a school when mothers drive less than 500 yards to the school with the attitude that they can park any where which in my case has been on my front lawn and on my drive, they block road junctions and drive on footways and believe they have the right to do so.

Brigadier,

I too am retired but find better things to do than stare out of the window at people going about their lawful business.

The reason I mention it is because I have received 3 missives from such people stuck to my windscreen because I have parked on a public highway

but dared to do this in front of their house.

The perpetrators were all old enough to receive a free bus pass and winter fuel allowance so statistically speaking over a small cohort group I am correct in my statement

and it is fair to extrapolate to a larger group.

I sympathise with the horrors of parking as I live next opposite a park and get the same,

especially in winter when people think that parking in your front garden whilst they go tobogganning is allowable

and cant see why you would want to go out anyway.
