I dread next NYE. I am unemployed and probably sanctioned because I didn't have the b**ls to complain properly. My flatmates have plenty of cash and hate me because I'm on the dole. They're going to have a party and spend a lot of cash, which I can't afford.

I am not into clubbing/drinking (too old for that). The venue I went last year costs in excess of £100 this year, so no way.

I contemplate the idea of spending NYE at some charity. This is something I wanted to do last year. Does anybody know any charity that organizes something for NYE, so that at least I can help somebody and be entertained at the same time?

I'd take a guess that contacting a charity such as Age UK, The Salvation Army or Shelter might be a good start.

Another alternative would be to see if your town or some place near you has 'street angels'...my town had them until recently. They're basically people who do late night patrols keeping an eye on folk who've had a bit too much to drink. They seem to be attached to local churches in my area, so it might be worth speaking to some churches where you are?

@laughingGirl: no way I'm going to be a street vigilante!

@andydd: not an option, tv and common areas will be hijacked by flatmates and their smelly partymates.

Eh??!! They're not street vigilantes! They go round looking after people, making sure they're OK...and handing out lolly pops, but I have no idea why they do that.

how about working in a pub NYE get paid and have a bit of fun

Of course I didn't think about it. As there's plenty of work around and as a middle aged man I surely have the tits and the legs for the job!

I don't think my son got his bar job for his tits and legs!!

Roughly where in the country are you?

If you're in Brighton there's a free mediation event if you take and share vegetarian food and soft drinks. Each to their own!

My OH has lovely tits and legs*, but I'm pretty sure that he managed pubs for 15 years because he was quite good at tapping barrels of real ale and evicting coked up drunks. :-)

Joking apart, Assisted's suggestion is a really good idea - my OH used to have lots of problems getting staff for NYE because nobody wants to do it these days.

NYE in pubs require someone who can add up and pull pints, tits and legs are optional, also saves you having to join in collective hugging and kissing at midnight if you stay behind the bar.

Also just to say NYE is just another night you dont have to go out get drunk and spend loads of money.

I'm doing something similar at a local Arts Centre that night. To be honest, I hate New Year's Eve and all the rot that goes with it, but it might still be worth asking round some of the pubs where you live.

I'll spare you all the "it might lead to something" **** (that's what I got told about volunteering all them years ago and it hasn't), but if they're desperate for an extra hand on the night they might at least be willing to pay you in free "refreshments" and cab fare home...

I remember one new years eve (about 20 years ago!) I worked in a gate house for a factory with another bloke, and let in 2 lorrys all evening :p. We both took in some cans and watched TV for 12 hours at £12 per hour... I used that money to buy a games console I seem to remember...

I hate the whole winter season (especially Xmas and NYE). If I had a choice (but I don't). I wouldn't get off the internet or move away from the telly on NYE. Sooner it's over, the better. Don't mind going out for a drink or 2 on New Years Day though.

PS. My Birthday is Xmas Day, and that is another reason for me to hate it.

I used to say of my MIL that she wasn't happy unless she was miserable. I used to think positive thinking was a load of rubbish but I've had to concede it does make a difference although not always easy to achieve.

Whatever everyone does I hope everyone has a good time. :-)

I suspect your flatmates don't hate you because you're on the dole, I'd wager it's other reasons. My suggestion is to use the new year as a time for reflection - it's much easier to get on in life when you can get on with people, it makes you a much happier person! Get yourself a bottle of cider and join in ;)

I will be at home watching DVD's - cant stand the cheesy pre-recorded party stuff!

Here's to a happier you and hopefully you'll strap on a pair and start complaining x

Suggest the above if you don't fancy earning a cab fare home. If your flatmates are really as bad as you say then at least a spot of work/crashing their do will **** them off!

Go celebrate with your mum and dad, I'm sure they would be pleased to see you.

Thanks, good idea, the only problem is they died about 30 years ago.
