Being that my girlfriends not a member here,i'm posting this thread on her behalf.......

Anyway she has just been offered, which she accepted,a job at B&Q, whish pays £6.40 per hour and she'll be working 20 hours per week.

So this is surely £128 per week, which is £6.656 per year.

B&Q took photocopies of her passport and national insurance card etc and said thats all they need and that she needs to do nothing further.

So we presume she will get paid and her tax and national insurance will be deducted without her needing to do anything?

Also how much national insurance and tax will be deducted on that income?

Thankyou in advance.

You can always get her to become a member :)

She won't pay any tax on £6,656. There is a tax free allowance of £8,105 before any tax is due.

She won't have to do anything, B&Q will deduct anything that is due and it will be detailed on a payslip that she will be given.

Hi.....

No she never claimed benefits of any kind.We/she assumed she would find employment quickly, plus i was taking care of things and then we went abroad for quite some time.

So in theory after being self-employed for many years, the past 3 for several reasons she never got round to claiming benefits of any kind.Is that significant then?

What I'm trying to establish are the sources of income from 6 April up to the date she became employed by B&Q

If your girlfriend was in receipt of self employed income, the amount of profit less allowable expenses will need to be established.

It is likely that HMRC will operate the tax code for B&Q on a week 1/month 1 basis which means that each week or month your girlfriend is paid will be treated as if it were the first week or month of the tax year, this is because full details of your girlfriends income are not yet known.

However, even if the code is operated on this basis no tax will be payable as the amount paid is below the threshold but once the self employed profit to cessation is known, this added to the B&Q income there will be tax due on the profits which will be paid via self assessment return.

Turning now to the NI, Class 2 NI would have been paid on the self employed income. Class 1 is paid on employed income but again only if the income above the threshold (same as tax) except there is a 0% rate (the lower earnings limit) which protects entitlement to benefits in the future

Thankyou............

So being she has not worked,or claimed any benefits,or had any income for 3 years............seemingly she will not be deducted tax or NI on this income.

Kind regards.
