Daughter said today she received an electric shock from the keyboard of her toshiba sattelite laptop L500. Anyone any ideas, it was plugged in and charging the battery whilst she was using it, so I have said she can only use it on battery power from now on to be safe when Ive looked into it.

She was playing simms3 for some time and wondered if it would have been static elec or someting to worry about. Any ideas appreciated its only a few days old.

Ive used laptops for years and never had a problem with any of mine, thanks xx

Looks like plastic and they look fine. There were two display models in the store, one had broken buttons, you know obviously took some wear instore, this one however was fine and only reduced as they had two identical ones on display. Wondered if button tops moving as she types apart from that dont know.

t'will be static yes

there is no way anything lethal gets to a laptop

the low voltage power supply is double isolated too

so dont worry.

it would prob of been static from elsewhere discharging through the lsptop to earth rather than a charge FROM the laptop.

no need to do that.

there is no way mains can get to the lappy , impossible

put it down to external static discharginf through the laptop not FROM the laptop.

in otherwords, the laptop is properly protecting your child as it discharged static safely from an external source,..

You get a static shock from natural fibers rubbing against man made fibers, so if she'd just walked across a vinyl floor in cotton socks for example... nothing to do with the laptop, that was just her discharging rather fast (and painfully!)

Probably static, and the DC out from the mains on mine is only 19V/3.42A which isn't going to cause any damage anyway. But do take it back if you think - or she thinks - it is unsafe to use.

Static is mostly due to clothing, and a good way of removing the problem is by using a fabric softner with your washing (if you don't already.)

Thanks for all the advice, funny enough I am one of those who get shocks off the shopping trolley etc, so could be something in the need to use better conditioner for an idea. At moment using cheap tablets all in one sort of thing.

She has been using it today and its fine, for once I didnt over panic and condem the laptop etc....:D Though pointed out to daughter slamming the lid because of it will shorten its life;)

That is why electro-shock therapy works so well... you will do anything (rational to yourself or not) to avoid a 2nd shock.

A good tip if you constantly get a shock off a car, touch the metal of the car with your hand before you put your foot on the floor. This earths you thrugh your feet, and they don't feel the shock.

Any seperate fabric conditioner will lower the static your clothes generate. Try it and see if you get fewer static shocks :)

Moments when you play a blinder of a practical joke like that at work make it so worthwhile :p
