If you're happy with your current PC, why not buy some more memory for it, and a better graphics card. That'll work out cheeper. Sent you a PM on how to do this.

not really up to upgrading my current pc because in the past i have upgraded my ram and the pc and went faulty, it started to freeze for no reason and had to take it out, but would it make any difference if i were to buy one of the base units apart from the basics?

what can i play with GeForce 7050 256mb

http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/store/dix_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1254155723.1250172689@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccekadehmmijddjcflgceggdhhmdgmk.0&category_oid=-33356&sku=334745&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null#productInformationSection

what do you think, any better than the pervios base units?

The GeForce 7050 is generally found as an onboard graphics chip (not seperate graphics card) it's OK, slightly better than you have now (won't blow your socks off)

The Dixons PC is slightly better than the other 2 (better processor), but it is slightly more money. In my oppinion, their ain't a lot between them all so go with the best you can afford.

All the PC's are quite a bit better than your current one, but that is tempered with the fact that vista needs more power and memory. (I'm not a fan of vista, but thats just me.)

Well, the PB website says it does. I think the Dixons site just ment it doesn't have a phisical seperate card for the sound.

Plus I don't know of a motherboard that doesn't have built in sound.

The motherboard has built in sound acording to the PB website... the only way that could change is if dixons removed that motherboard and put in a completely different motherboard that they had managed to find with no sound on it... that would be a task I'd not like to undertake!

Trust me, it has sound. I'm so confidant that I will post a picture of me wearing a mankini if it doesnt!!!

they've all had onboard sound for many years now, though I still use a card because it's better quality.

sorry another issue about that base unit. Just want on the PB website to see the base unit and it seems as though the processers details on dixions are wrong this is what i found on the dixions website

  • Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6550
  • 2.13GHz, 1333MHz FSB, 4MB Cache

and this is what i found on PB website

CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 - spec_cpu_KC.65501.DE0 - Information and Instructions - IXTREME Y8520 - PB81X09301 - iXtreme - platform_amadeus_ixtreme - Desktop

dont get it, the name of the base unit is also wrong according to PB, dixons says it is an ipower and PB says its an ixtreme, if your sure enough that there will be a sound card on board then why are the deatils wrong?

OK 1st the diference in the number. Now, computers have always had something in the advertising that was designed to confuse. That is, as we know, the k in kg = kilo ie kilogram, or 1000 grams Therefor k = 1000. in computers kb = kilobyte = 1024 bytes therefor k=1024. They carry this on in all forms of memory, and in some cases (for reasons I don't undestand) they do it with speeds

All I can assume about the name is that when someone was labelling it they put the wrong one. If the number is above 8600 it's IPower

below it's IExtreme... that model must've confused them :p

My offer of a mankini still stands ;)

They both say Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6550. A check on the intel site Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor - Specifications says 2.33 ghz

There is so little diference between them (10% ish)

The intel list for the processor says 2.33 so thats would be my guess as to the one you have.

Maybe they are just keeping on the side of caution. The listing also says no manual, so maybe they're not sure :p

for a company selling computers they wouldn't know basic things like that? OK what do you think, you say it will have a sound card onboard otherwise you will wear a mankin, but will it have 2.33ghz rather than 2.13ghz, and is it an ixtreme rather than ipower?

being refurbished probably has something to do with it?

btw why is the pc cheap?

I'd guess (but not confidant enough to do the same mankini deal I'm afraid) that it's the one listed on the PB website.

Refurbished is probably sold and returned, so all hard drives wiped and re-installed.

It's cheap because it's "refurbished".
