Bought an LCD tv from comet about 8 months ago, it now has developed a fault (obviously it's still under manufactuers warranty).

Engineer has just been today and says he has to order a part which will take a week to come.

Given the tv is only 8 months old, I wasn't best pleased with this and contacted comet again - they said they can't replace it despite being under warranty as only their engineers can do that.

Is this true?

Shouldn't it be replaced given it is still under manufacters warranty?

Depends on the cost of repair / replacement. You can't ask for a replacement if it is more economical to repair the item, unless you can show it would cause you undue inconvenience.
