Now this is a game i play with mates and my missus, we pick one company each day, not allowing ourselves to steal eachothers previous companies, and see when news of them hits the press.

So with Woolies gone, Zaavi selling DVD's at 20% off, and PC World rumoured to be struggling... Question is... When will the next company go? And the even bigger question is... Who will that company be?

I believe it will be a large DIY retailer... Possibly B&Q.

(Remember this is all fun, i've had a bad day today and don't want B&Q's solicitors on my back, this is just a game, see who gets it right, simple)

cant see it being B&Q as they are the fore runner in DIY and they are still spending money on store refits like there is no tomorrow they have just finished the refit of the portsmouth store which may i add was a brand new store 2 yrs ago and just about to start refitting the Havant store.

If a DIY chain is gona go under id say it will be homebase or wicks

If I have been of help to you please feel free to click my scales to the left Thanks.:)

Do you think B&Q get the materials for the refit at cost?:p

Funny enough, they've just refurbished the Hedge End store in Southampton too. Must have cost a fortune!

Can't find a blerdy thing now!

Do you think the bookies (no pun intended oh great one;)) are taking bets about who is next? Unless they are on the road to ruin as well. I drive past retail parks with boarded up units and wonder how many more will end up like that in the near future.

Sure they do, but I wonder if they also get trade discount!!

Oh and I think we're due for a big food sector name to go. Watch out for the Somerfield group, who have been struggling for ages with a host of very outdated Kwik Save premises. Maybe Bauger will go all the way and we will lose Iceland!

Waitrose, although propped up by John Lewis are WAY over priced and will have to adapt or die, and M&S have already announced a huge cost cutting excercise, but will it be enough??

I am also wondering about B&Q.

They might be refitting and opening, but these decisions were made years ago and the money has already been spent.

Go into your local B&Q, and look at how their merchandising has changed so that they can put less stuff on the pegs! Looks clever, but it reduces how much money they have tied up in stock. The will claim this makes sense, but what if its because they dont want to get caught out like Woolies did, by investing in stock that didnt sell, then having to borrow and borrow to buy the "bread and butter" stock.

The only problem with this sort of merchandising is you end up with empty pegs sooner and for longer!

No retailer has yet worked out how to effectively sell nothing!

A branch of the Co-op near me has just taken out all the self service checkouts that they spent thousands installing. This is because they failed to take into account that the majority of the customers were elderly and never used them as they were too complicated. This resulted in having to overly staff the self service checkouts to provide added assistance, which counter-acted the purpose of them being self service! Also queues on the fewer remaining normal checkouts got too big.

It was only when the customers started to go to Tesco Metro 100yds down the road that they decided to act!

A company that short sighted isn't going to last in this recession.

Maybe DFS - people have got less money to spend (especially on new sofas) and it is getting harder and harder to get credit.

I am going to have to correct u there for 2 reasons.

1) the Somerfield for courts have NOT been brought out i know there is one a couple of miles up the road.

2) not all the stores were brought by co op. My local was Morrisons and so were a few others.
