Straight up, Rooster ?

Yes. They are edible and very highly prized. The cap can grow up to 10 inches in diameter, although the smaller ones tend to be better flavoured.

Any way you like, although mushrooms have a better flavour if only lightly cooked.

If you want to deep-fry them, use a chip-pan with a basket. Get the oil smoking-hot and lower the basket into the oil for about 30 seconds max.

That will seal the outside of the mushroom before the water content is boiled off.

Alternatively, just brush the inside of a non-stick fryingpan (a steel one if you've got one) with oil or a couple of squirts of sunflower-oil spray. Cook on a low heat with a lid on the pan, until the mushrooms have just lost their opaque appearance. They will be cooked but will retain the succulence and all of the flavour.

this year has not been a good one for penny buns... one year I picked over a dozen.

No, could'nt be bothered typing Mushroom :p

Dave, the two pictures look the same, eh ? for someone that's not a Mushroom expert, like Crusher and Rooster.

If I saw they two mushrooms standing together in a field, I would not know what one to eat

honestly maroondevo....

the top mushroom has a brown top, and instead of gills underneath the cap tiny tubes, yellow in colour.

the bottom mushroom grows out of a "cup" at the base, and has a green top (however there is a variation of colour known for these most poisonous of mushrooms, regarded as the most deadly in the world).

the death cap.
