When the DPA legislation was drawn up, I am sure that the authors did not intend companies to lose money in processing DPA requests. This is why they are allowed to charge. I would propose that they considered £10 a reasonable pre-estimate of costs, and imposed a limit to prevent companies jacking up their prices to put people off requesting information.

Remember that they would have considered that as inflation increased, the level of automation would also increase, making the task easier, thus keeping costs level.

So - when you think about the mammoth tasks that a DPA request could generate, consider the cost of that compared to returning an item unpaid, bouncing a cheque etc. And it's all automated. Some banks don't even have any material costs as they don't even write to you!

This makes any defence that the banks are charging a reasonable amount to cover costs even more laughable.
