I have just searched for car insurance through confused.com and I have to say the site is brilliant.

Our main family cars insurance was £310 with Norwich Union and through Confused.com I have got loads of quotes for less than that, the best is £190 with Admiral.

Our second old car insurance is over £350 with Norwich Union and Confused.com quoted £144 for this with the Post Office.

I tend to keep away from sites like this but I have saved over £340 just by checking.

Hope this is of help to someone. p.s I don't work for them.

I found the best deal for one of my cars from Admiral and the second car with the Post Office. I actually thought that if I had both cars insured with one company I would save but that was not the case for me. Norwich Union Direct turned out to be an expensive insurer, I am just glad I checked what I could save.

Another good site to use to compare quotes is Insure Supermarket

Similar to Confused but seems to bring back more results. I would suggest searching both sites when shopping around.

When you've found the best quote, try going directly to that insurer's website - you may be able to get an even better quote still.

For example, with the above sites previously I found the best quote for myself was with Post Office. I then went on the Post Office website and found a slightly better price, plus they were offering £50 cashback. I then read through some further details and found that the insurance was provided through Zurich, so contacted Zurich and got a better price still even taking the cashback into account.

I work in Insurance, and not trying to put anyone off but when checking around always check the excess levels. I was informed by an advisor that NU Direct recently cancelled any link with InsureSupermarket motor quotes because they were obtaining quotes with 2 excess levels but under same quote reference.

Its also worth checking what any 'scrape' site includes. Many don't include courtesy car, protected no claims, or legal cover. These 'scrape' sites (confused.com & insuresupermarket) obtain your info then just get basic prices for you but with varying excess. (Normally you find the cheaper price but high excess at the top, but most people see a price and dont look at the cover)

Also, If a price is good, check what it will cost you during the policy term. Most brokers will add extra fee's for admin. This could be for duplicate certificates/paperwork, changing your details or missing a payment. It can vary from £10 to £25 a time!

I wont go into blowing my trumpet but most direct companies will only charge you if there is a change to rating factors ie: Changing Car, or Address or Cover.

Finally, see if the online price is the same if you called up to accept it. There are some that penalise you for paying over the phone for an online quote. Lets face it, this may be 2006 but not everyone likes transmitting card details online.

At the end of the day, go for what you can afford but making sure you have the cover you need.

Its when you claim that you find how good your insurance company is !

In Insurance, thinking "It wont happen to me" could mean you dont have the cover you want at a time when you want it! - Dont always reject a Courtesy Car or Legal because you find the cost too much! Whats more valuable? YOU or the Policy Premium?

Blimey what a rip off, just thought I would check confused.com myself and EEEEEEEEEEEK! :o

Cheapest quote was just shy of £600 and most expensive was just short of £900

Anyone care to guess what we pay currently through NU???

£280 nice to know you are currently getting the best deal, for us NU has consistently been cheap with the only other company getting close being CIS who we initially went with but then screwed us about we told them to naff off and went with NU who have been brilliant even when we had to claim when some numpty on a motorbike decided he would be clever and try to turn left on a roundabout from the right hand lane and destroyed the front of our car (called police he got done for dangerous driving AND prosecuted for the state of his bike, idiot!) so cant fault them and have just renewed again.

On a side note it doesnt matter what car we put in it always seems to be around £300

citroen ZX 1400 (worth £250) £269

Volvo 2.0 Turbo (worth £1000) £280

Fiat Marea 1.8 ELX Weekender (worth £2000) £280

Volvo 960 CD 3.0 auto 24v (worth £2000) £289

Weird isnt it?

Oh another thing about NU they dont care whether named drivers have a full licence of not you just have to tell them how long they have had it, I was shocked so called them (no details for prov on website) and had it confirmed that they dont care about that, so anyone looking to at a later date teach their kids to drive go to NU they dont charge extra for people on prov licences!
