Bad work and installer not completing job.

Hi There

i am a disabled person suffering from Progressive MS. As my condition is getting worse, we have had to build an extension to the side of the house for a bedroom / shower facility. This meant that we had to redesign the staircase, and took on the service by a local carpenter, who supposedly has built stairs.

This all started in March 2020, having paid a deposit in June to get the work rolling.

 

The carpenter was never on time, communication was poor. He asked for the original stairs to be removed one friday afternoon (done by Builder) as he was due to install the new staircase the following morning. He then texted late in the evening saying he cannot do it till monday, leaving us no access to The bedrooms, bathroom etc. my children used a ladder to get upstairs. I had to sleep on the sofa for 2 days.

 

When the stairs were installed, they were much smaller in width, when I complained, he said to just put capping on the gaps. The Handrail was put in the wrong place, and he came back and corrected some of it, but to date it is not finished.

 

I have been calling him, sending him texts, since August, and asking him to come and finish the job. Its now march and he is saying, I don’t have time to come around as he is busy running behind, as the wife’s given birth, and he was waiting for me to get back to him and best to get someone else to finish the job.

I responded saying that I have been continuously send you messages and for you now to say you “was waiting for me to get back to me” is completely unacceptable.

 

As I have said at the beginning, I am disabled, and desperately needed the staircase and handrails finished, for fear of falling without handrails. I don’t think this guy has any intention of finishing the stairs, and I want to know my options please. Im out of pocket by 2.5k

It sounds dreadful. What is the name of the trader please?

How did you pay? I I suppose that you probably paid by cash or paid by bank transfer

 

You say that you paid a deposit. Is that the 2.5 K that you are referring to? What was the value of the whole job? Is there any money unpaid?
