DOG breeders struggling to sell puppies during the coronavirus pandemic are flogging off surplus pets for experiments.

All excess breeds of dog and puppy "are destined for the scalpel”, to die in agony in French animal testing labs, warns campaign group One Voice.

  • 2 weeks later...

This goes against everything I'm observing during the current emergency.  The demand for puppies has gone through the roof and prices have risen accordingly.  Current prices for advertised pups are around 3x what they were before lockdown - and people are paying them.  This is 3x ridiculous prices to start with from unregistered, unlicensed breeders who were always only breeding for pure profit.

I make the point of this being for advertised animals because every breeder I know personally doesn't need to advertise, has waiting lists and hasn't inflated their prices.  Maybe puppy farms have had 'excess' stock because of travel restrictions.  Registered breeders have been able to deliver pups (and kittens) from a couple of weeks into lockdown.
