Hi. First of all, thanks in advance for any advice.

Today, out of the blue, I received this text:

"Message for ...... we need to speak with you today regarding a personal matter. Please contact Capquest on.... quoting ....."

I did a quick google and found out they are a debt collection agency.

I have no outstanding debt that I know about. About 20 years ago I had a few small debts I didn't pay, but over the years I have paid off all the ones I found on Experian etc. About 5 years ago I started rebuilding my credit score. And 2 years ago I bought a house. My credit score is currently good, I have no CCJs or outstanding debts on record as far as I can tell. I now have no trouble getting credit cards or loans etc.

I can only imagine this is either a mistake, or they have bought some old statute barred debt and are trying their luck.

If it was just me I would ignore it. However, I am now living with a partner, expecting a kid, and have a mortgage so I want to play it safe. Can you please give me any advise on how to proceed with this?

Thanks again!

J.

ignore it.

a DCA is not a bailiff

wait till/if they write

please don't hit Quote...just type we know what we said earlier..

DCA's view debtors as suckers, marks and mugs

NO DCA has ANY legal powers whatsoever on ANY debt no matter what it's Type

and they

are NOT and can NEVER  be BAILIFFS. even if a debt has been to court..

If everyone stopped blindly paying DCA's Tomorrow, their industry would collapse overnight...

Defiantly block it they are a pain else

Assuming they have bought some old debt. Is there anything they can do if I just ignore their texts?

I just want to make sure I am on a firm legal footing here.

Would it not be an idea to just ask them what it is about?

Whilst I appreciate the responses I am getting on here, they seem to be saying to just ignore them, without giving any reasons why this is the best course of action.

What I don't want to happen is to find out months down the I suddenly have a CCJ because they took me to court over some parking fine I knew nothing about, for instance.

If they have been sending letters to an old address or something, could they potentially take me to court over something I do not know about? This is my worry.

what the beep have capquest got to do with council/police parking fines?

and you don't get a CCJ on a parking fine either...

not sure what sites you are reading here jm

but that's total rubbish.

capquest are a DCA

they deal with civil [consumer finance] debts.

now if you've not informed your creditors you have moved

that could be an issue.

but as you say you have no debts

then ignore is ok

as theres nothing they can do with any of them

I take it all your old addresses show on your cra file?

Thanks for the reply.

I do not know what my cra file is, but on Noddle all my addresses are showing going back 15 years, apart from a few months where I stayed in a mates spare room.

'Parking fine' was just an example. I am just concerned in case there might be a bill gone to an old address that I did not know about, and I want to make sure I don't get my credit rating screwed up.

cra file = noddle or one of the others credit reference file.

your addressesa re all there

as is your current one.

so it would be pretty crass for them to file to an old address.

The reason you don't reply to a DCA is simply because they have no power over you. Replying will only encourage them, they may be looking for someone with a similar name to you and they won't care if the get the correct Mr x or the wrong one, you respond, it becomes your debt in their eyes. Ignore is good advice, if anyone tries to take you to court the court will contact you, do not ignore that.

Thank you. That makes sense.
