State of the laptop? It's not used much and has been left open on a shelf for a few months which is why theres some dust on it.

The HDD is a SSD which is roughly a year old.

Don't know if you know this but I do work in IT support for many years, I have even done the Supporting and Troubleshooting Windows 10 Course. I still hate it.

Could always boot into a live OS via optical or USB and look at the SSD from there. Win 10 is rapidly becoming another Microsoft debacle, as soon as you disable the nags, and clean out the install 6 gig, another update replaces them. Wonder how many will go to a Mac or a 'nix on the back of this?

We could do with some help from you.

SSD or mechanical, the fault has to be there, there is nothing else except malware that could do it 'as you already know'. The OS can't decide it's not going to load on it's own

Nothing wrong with the SSD.

Fixed it with bootsect /nt60 drive_letter: /mbr

So yes Windows 10's last update done something to the boot which prevented it from launching.

I dont get why people dont like win 10. Its sleeker, faster, more secure, more stable, more compatibility. It seems the ONLY peopel that have an issue are the ones using 10 year old tech where mobo compontents arent supported, and even the manufacturer of the hardware itself gave up support years ago.

I aren't using a 10 year old machine, my laptop is just over a year old, and besides I know someone that downloaded it and said it was a heap of junk and had nothing but trouble and advised against it

This week in a small IT support company:

1. Windows 10 upgrade prevented the user from being able to log in, removed the option for the administration account to login as well. Resulted in £160 fees for the client for us to repair it.

2. Windows 10 upgrade froze half way through. Resulted in half a days work recovering data and reinstalling windows 7.

3. Windows 10 upgrade caused the wireless adapter to disable on a laptop causing a wfh client to lose a days work.

Sorry to go against you, but I have been running it for over 2 years since it started beta and have had now problems whatsoever. I would be inclined to say the problems are all finger trouble.

soulsister14 have a go, it just like Windows 7 but has all the advantages that renegadeimp pointed out. It really is the best Windows so far so give it a go and if you don't like it you can revert back to the OS you are using now.

Some will have no issues but companies with legacy peripherals could be in a world of pain. Mind you there is Virtualisation, so run Win 7 in a VM, Microsoft are being very sneaky and the Corporate users are getting to be unhappy bunnies.

We could do with some help from you.

JoeyJoeC: if you work in IT, why are you letting your users install updates and especially OS ones?! I would be a whole heap of trouble if 10 appeared on some of my 500+ machines! We have tested for 10 compatibility over the last year or two but are still some way off full deployment. You are right however; VM's are the way forward. I already use them for a few dept's. There is a pretty simple simple script i used to remove the icon for my private work just removing reg entries, etc. No time for PJ's though these days.....

It's not an IT department within a company. We supply IT services to clients. New clients come along every day and it takes a while to take complete control of their IT. Typically we will lock down their PC's and give basic permissions to use applications, but not for installation.
