So the unelected undemocratic house of lords have done it again by voting to allow 16&17 year olds to vote in the EU referendum, how the hell can this unelected rabble be allowed to overrule the democratically elected government again.

It’s about time something was done about this shower. I was under the impression that they were just a revising chamber, not makers of law.

It is a revising chamber - they revised the EU referendum bill to state that 16 and 17 year olds should be allowed to vote in this particular referendum. They didn't offer a general extension of the franchise. Presumably the government will use its majority in the Commons to revise things straight back and you'll get what you want. Problem solved.

You say they revised the EU referendum bill to state that 16 and 17 year olds

should be allowed to vote. (it was not a revised bill, they want to revise

it/change the bill.

There was no bill in the commons relating to 16&17 year olds getting the vote,

it was an early day motion No31.

This motion was put together by 32 SNP-19 Labour – 6 Lib Dems-1 Green

3 Social democrat +Labour party-3 Plaid Cymru + 1 Conservative (obviously a Europhile)

65 in total.

I have never heard of the House of so called lords revising a house of Commons motion.

And then you have their lordships:-

Labour is to table an amendment to the EU Referendum Bill in the Lords at report stage

that would allow 16 and 17 year-olds to vote in the poll.

The Labour leader in the Lords, Baroness Smith, told Newsnight that she thought the

Lords were "likely to approve such an extension to the franchise"

amendment:- in this case means in addition to the EU referendum bill, in other words

telling the commons what to do, ie making policy.

In other words they are trying to influence the poll.

We're saying the same thing. The HoL voted to amend the bill as presented by the Commons, and, for this referendum only, allow 16 and 17 year olds to vote. The government disagrees with this position and will seek to overturn this amendment when it returns to the Commons. The government, holding an overall majority of seats in the Commons, will presumably succeed in doing so. The Lords will capitulate. End of.

You call the House of Lords a rabble but what were your thoughts when they voted down the tax credits?

The House of Lords can not pass laws only make suggestions and pass it back to the commons , if the house of lords refuse to pass a bill the government can use the Parliament act to force it through, you will remember it was used in 3 times with the last labour government and threatened other times as well

It is probably better than a totally appointed house who will after all just mirror the party of the day

Any opinion I give is from personal experience .

16 & 17 yr olds should have the right to vote. If they continue to not have a vote, they should not have to pay any income taxes.

Why are we allowing those over 75 years of age a vote on membership of the EU. Most will be dead within 10 years, so it will not affect them for too many years. ( this is a question that was raised by someone, when debating this issue. It is a fair question to ask )

We could do with some help from you.

As for the HOL, they are part of our system and fully entitled to amend legislation. In the end, if there is parliamentary ping pong on this, they will eventually give in.

It seems the jury is out on allowing 16 and 17 year olds to vote. It apparently worked well in Scotland , others think they are too young. I wonder how many do actually pay income tax as few apprenticeships pay anything approaching the tax threshold . No taxation without representation is a powerful argument. To mirror the colonials we could just push all the MPs into the Thames. That is if they ever go near to the commons

Any opinion I give is from personal experience .
