Halloween is approaching. Can you believe this event is coming around again.

I get so excited this time of year.

Already i have been in shops, supermarkets going down the aisles trying masks on,putting claws on.

Appearing around corners of aisles. giving friends the scare of the day.

Playing with the puppet ghosts things like that.

Seems to raise a smile or two in a world of serious issues.

Or wondering perhaps when i will be locked up.

You are never to old to enjoy these things. Not that security does not give you strange looks as a claw appears to shake their hand.

But it usually ends up in a laugh.Thank goodness.

If you are older remember your youth. When you were children running around.

Go back there, think of those happy times,a happy place. And smile as you remember.

So we are building up to this day.Saturday the 31ST october.

Get your bags of goodies ready for the kids when they call round with their mums and dads.

Do not turn the lights out and avoid.Do not dread this day, enjoy it.Get a Pumpkin, carve it,light it.Put it outside your door.

Enjoy this event,have a laugh

If you wish to,post a picture.

I will, i have a nice one from a few years ago.In a while i will.

If you have any recipes for this day post them.Perhaps a picture as well.

Give others ideas for this tradition.

Do you have a party on this day.

I can feel many wanting to post,or i hope they do.:-)

If you are not a member just join us,we are a friendly lot.Life is not serious all the time we have to have fun as well.

Bah Humbug :-)

I live in a sheltered housing complex with door entry system so we don't get many 'little darlings' coming to my door however, the Scheme Manager (formally warden) allows her grandchildren to go to some flats (there are some grumpy gits here) The children always make an effort and when I pretend to be scared, they love it especially one who is autistic.

If you are asked to deal with any matter via private message, PLEASE report it.

I used to have all that when I lived in a ground floor flat in Hertfordshire, it was awful. They used to deliberately make the dogs bark and think it was funny :(

Well i nearly fell of my chair and spat my coffee out onto my keyboard when Samhuinn was mentioned.

I did not know what it was.

Since looking i feel slightly enlightened now.

Are these two white witches do you think.

One of them says she was first in the shops to see the Halloween goods.

We all know Tawny was first in there.

Giving me the shivers.

I am off now, away with the fairies for a hour or two.

So while you wait or think about what to post a link that explains about-Samhuinn.Or Samhain, whatever you know what i mean i feel.

OOOH,SHIVER i have seen Determinators post below.Spook tours,very brave.In a cellar on this night:jaw:

Plague victim ghosts are in the cellar. determinator are you feeling ok.Do you need any medical treatment.Any potions or lotions.Just stirring my Cauldron at the moment. If i can help in any way.

A ghost tour.I will return to this thread as it goes dark tonight.

Dinner and a tour not to bad i feel.

With over 600 years of history it is little wonder that there have been so many reputed ghostly sightings in The White Hart.

Watch out for the little girl who plays around the Hotel. History has it that she died in a fire in the building. Or the lady who died when her horse drawn carriage pulled in to the archway of what is now our car park. Apparently she didn’t duck in time and had her neck broken.

Listen out for the noises and watch out for visions from the cellar where plague victims were kept and the minstrels’ gallery where local hangings took place.

I am wondering now who may be reading this thread, are you.:faint:

Yes:madgrin: dressed up last year and haunted St Albans. Had a tour of the White Hart Hotel dates back to 15th century, ooo down in the cellar, gr8 stories, QE1 and Shakespeare. A muriel recently discovered on a wall next door had a tale to tell. Royal secrets?

Look further tawnyowl, it was not samhain, but samhuinn I referred.

Wicca is a 20th century construct, built on mainly late19th - early 20th Century beliefs about older beliefs,

Samhuinn is older than Stonehenge.

Trick or treat was never around when I was young we just had spirit tapping basically knock on a door and leg it,its just another excuse to sell us all load of crap.

As a warning to those who might be buying a costume even though they might say they go beyond fire regulations they are still flammable the fire brigade have carried tests and are pushing for costumes to be fire proof as the current standards are too low for clothing.

I will come knocking Nystagmite at your door.Do some spirit tapping-knock on your door and leg it.

Note to self: Get a two gallon bucket, throw in a handful or two of SwellGell and add water. Cover with towel and place beside door. When the little darlings come knocking, offer the bucket up and invite them to grope around in the bottom.

Plastic spiders and glass eyeballs in the mix are optional.

We were a bit more inventive. We had cotton, a safety pin and a button and would attach the cotton to the button and tie it to the open safety pin. Creep up so someones window and stick the pin into the putty. Then trailing the cotton away to a hiding place, we could

tap, tap, tap on the window.

We would tap on the window and they would take a look out but see nothing. After a few taps some would hide behind the curtains and as soon as the tapping started would whip the curtains back but still not see anyone.

I even remember one man hiding behind the front door and swinging it open as we tapped but of course there was no one there, we were behind a neighbours hedge.

If the safety pin was placed where if wasn't obvious, we could even tap while they looked out the window.

Well i have delved a bit deeper into Samhuinn-and found it fascinating.

Feel i must post about this .

Samhuinn, from October 31st to November 2nd, was a time of no-time. Celtic society, like all early societies, was highly structured and organised - everyone knew their place. But to allow that order to be psychologically comfortable, the Celts knew that there had to be a time when order and structure were abolished - when chaos could reign. And Samhuinn was such a time. Time was abolished for the three days of this festival, and people did crazy things - men dressed as women and women as men. Farmers' gates were unhinged and left in ditches, peoples' horses were moved to different fields, and children would knock on neighbours' doors for food and treats in a way that we still find today, in a watered-down way, in the custom of trick-or-treating on Hallowe'en.

There are Samhuinn charities even, that go deeper into this tradition.

Beltane Fire Society

Formed in 1988, Beltane Fire Society is a community arts performance charity that hosts the Beltane Fire Festival and Samhuinn Fire Festival in Edinburgh.

A video explaining Samhuinn.

And a few more.

And just for a moment back to Samhain

Well i have covered myself now-who drove me to write this at 3-30 in the morning-who knows-makes you wonder many things.

I found your post very interesting and have read it a few times.

There is no doubt i have to try that out this year.

Funny i cannot remember getting familiar with a witch,i would remember surely.

Oh dear i have remembered two tried to get familiar with old Tawny when much younger.

But were they, how can you tell such things.

They did not have a cat sat on their shoulder.Or a owl. Did not Cackle, have their Cauldron with them.Anything like that.

Enough i feel i now have a wand made of Driftwood to ward any demons away.

Coming to a store near you soon.

Tawnyowls Driftwood Wands.

I may even post a picture.

Driftwood for a wand?

Perhaps little more than the demonisation of the major competing religion of the time.
