Thousands of people, including the descendants of First World War veterans, are to be given a chance to be part of the centenary commemorations of one of the bloodiest battles of the conflict.

A ballot has opened for members of the public who want to join the official Battle of the Somme commemoration next year.

Will descendants of those who died be given priority status for these tickets ?

I think that will cover most decendants, The Menin Gate memorial is for all who served. I have been there for the last post and puts a lump in your throat. A whole generation was almost wiped out. I doubt there is a singe family not touched by this conflict

I realise that is in Belgium but this is not about political borders, that is what caused the war to start with. It is remberence and respect. It is only natural for the Somme rememberence to be concluded at the Mennin Gate.
