Having taken up residence in my new home, and being currently an empty shell, I have a blank canvas to work with

It seems i have one wall with that horrid artex type wall paper with all the dimples, the remaining walls are the normal vinyl type that you can wipe down.

I prefer not to rent a steamer so the good old elbow grease is the order of the day with a scraper

I have been told to score the paper with a scraper then use fabric conditioner in a spray bottle.

And Decorators out there with the best methods with minimal fuss??

If the paper is anaglypta painted with emulsion best thing to do is soak it with warm water, leave it for about 15 minutes then try to get hold of a bottom corner and peal off the top layer.

If this works ok, continue to soak then leave for a bit then soak again until the paper becomes easy to scrape off.

If the paper is covered by a lot of coats of paint getting it to soak could be a problem and scoring it will enable the water to get behind.

If your going to the trouble of scoring it, you can buy a small steam stripper now pretty cheap which would do the job, save you a lot of hassle.

You'll get one for £20 in B&Q if you were near me I would have given you one for nowt :)

Any advice I give is honest and in good faith.:)

Just been having a nose, seems you can pick up a cheap steam stripper for about £20.00 from wicks, B&Q etc

Me thinks that will be my best bet

Thanks

Without a doubt and remember to start at the bottom of the wall working along the length at a height of about one meter then repeat until you get to the top.

Your also better keeping the windows and door shut to let the steam get to work.

Once you get all the paper off always sponge down the wall getting rid of any wee bit's you've missed :)

Definitely a steamer - I couldn't believe how quickly I removed a similar type of paper using a steamer.

Depends on whether you have solid or plasterboard walls. With solid wallls, removing paper is unlikely to damage the plaster. With plasterboard which has a skim of plaster, removing the paper will remove the plaster, so you have to be more careful..

The artex type wallpaper may indicate the wall surface behind is not great. You might have a replastering job on your hands.

Take your time and do not apply too much water or wallpaper remover. You can buy wallpaper remover liquid which helps loosen the adhesive and makes it easier. Steamer will make it come off quicker, but be careful with plasterboard walls. They don't like being made wet.

We could do with some help from you.

This sounds to me like woodchip paper (horrible stuff) and getting it off is just as simple. It will need scoring first then steaming.

What I did in one of the many places I lived was to start with a bare wall then use lining paper but put it up horizontally, not vertically. This has the effect of only needing 3 (very long) strips so less joins. Lining paper has the added benefit of hiding a myriad of sins beneath. The just paint.

Now i am impressed

I took note of this as it had been mentioned on quite a few forums

Plain ordinary Fabric Softener

I simply poured a bottle in to a bowel and applied with a sponge after herring bone the paper with the scraper and waiting for 15 minutes. It is a breeze, i will have this done in no time, and no steamer
