Hello,

sorry for posting in this section but I followed a music licence related-post I found through google.

I am a PhD student and I am writing a publication on classical music. I'd like to show in my publication 4 musical fragments taken from 4 different musical pieces of 4 different authors, two of whom from the beginning of the twentieth century and the remaining from the mid-century.

I would like to ask if I have to license the material and, if yes, how or where I can find more detailed information about.

Luca

I am not a lawyer or an expert, however, what you describe would appear to come under the heading of "fair use". Also, I suspect you would be permitted greater freedom if this publication is part of your academic work. Would also have thought this topic would be a regular occurrence within your university/college. Can the tutors provide guidance on this ?

No... you can't eat my brain just yet. I need it a little while longer.

Copyright lasts life plus 70 yrs.

The first that you describe is probably out of copyright. The second may be - you will know the dates of the composers deaths.

However, as pointed out, you are protected by the fair use provisions as you say that they are merely fragments - although of course you would be attributing the work anyway.
