I have become employed (albeit in a casual capacity) after a considerably long period of unemployment during which my debts have piled up. I would now like to sort my finances out using a debt management company.

Is there a difference between the companies that charge for this service and the free organisations?

Amongst the free ones, is one better than the other?

Also, is it possible to have debts written off?

I am not a citizen of the UK, although I have been normally resident here for almost 10 years. Does this impact upon any potential help I'd receive from the debt management companies?

Thank you for your replies!

Never pay for debt management!

You can do it yourself

It may be wise lo list the debts and rough ammount

Check your credit file

Don't just pay a fleecing debt collector after reciving a letter they may have no right to the debt

Any ppi to reclaim unlawfull fees ect

CCA requests may be the first thing to do

If i have helped in any way hit my star.

any advice given is based on experience and learnt from this site :-)

Whats a CCA request?

Just to clarify: When a debt is given to another company, does this mean they have no right to the debt? Most of my debts are not with the original creditors at present. Some have even changed hands more than twice!

As a first step, I am going to write to all my (known) creditors asking for 28 days while I contact a debt management company and arrange a budget and a management plan.

Is this okay or should I get a credit report first?

Thanks again!

Hi

Free independent established Citizens Advice online Self Administering Debt Management Plan Resource that might help

https://nedcab.cabmoney.org.uk/dmp.asp

Example DMP as per above

https://nedcab.cabmoney.org.uk/dmptour.asp

Citizens Advice General DMP link includes info on free providers etc

https://nedcab.cabmoney.org.uk/remedy_4.asp

Just going on what you have put you should be OK as far as the help question is concerned

Might be best however visiting your local CAB (if you have one) they should be able to advise on all issues and potential options

http://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/index/getadvice.htm

There are other free debt advice agencies - National Debtline for example

https://www.nationaldebtline.org/EW/Pages/default.aspx

Further info on here may also help

Best Wishes

You really need to check your credit file first

Noodle is free

CCA request is a copy of the credit agreement for loans credit card ect without that they can do little

Just because they write to you does not mean that you have to pay it they may have no right to it

A fee paying debt management company will happily put you in further debt to increase their profit
