After suffering from redundancy I have had to claim jobseekers allowance for the 1st time, however have recently had a 13wk sanction applied, as I did not apply for a job the job centre had brought to my attention. I didnt apply as i mistakenly thought it was at a different location to where it actually was and the travelling to and from it would be too much - full bus and metro timetables were handed in to explain my reasoning. However rather than simply bring my mistake to my attention and give me the opportunity to apply for the job at the right location i was placed on sanction.

I have appealed against this decision, and also filled in form to claim for hardship payment, however due to when this has fallen i believe i could be waiting up to 4 weeks for this payment. Im at a loss as to how the job centre expect me to be able to pay my bills in the meantime?

Any ideas please people, as this is all new to me

Many thanks unclebulgaria67 - i had a feeling that the job centres own targets would play a part!

According to one of the site team on here who works in a job centre they have guidelines they have to follow. They are too over worked to look at individual cases for too long, so make a judgement based on what they see, implementing the rules given to them. Then it is up to the benefit claimant to go through the appeals process and if there is valid reason given, then the sanction can be reconsidered.

Uncle Bulgaria has given sound advice, nothing to add really but would like to point out, there are no members of the Site Team who work in a Jobcentre.

My advice is based on my opinion, my experience and my education. I do not profess to be an expert in any given field. If requested, I will provide a link where possible to relevant legislation or guidance, so that advice provided can be confirmed and I do encourage others to follow those links for their own peace of mind. Sometimes my advice is not what people necesserily want to hear, but I will advise on facts as I know them - although it may not be what a person wants to hear it helps to know where you stand. Advice on the internet should never be a substitute for advice from your own legal professional with full knowledge of your individual case.

Please do not seek, offer or produce advice on a consumer issue via private message; it is against

forum rules to advise via private message, therefore pm's requesting private advice will not receive a response.

(exceptions for prior authorisation)

Indeed. I think, though, that in the comments Uncle Bulgaria refers to I may have used present tense for simplicity, inadvertently giving the impression that I still work there. I became a member of the CAG Site Team some time after I left Jobcentre Plus.
