I have a laptop on a extended warranty with comet.

On the 28th of August i took it for repair. (Hard disk failure)

10 days later they call me up to take the laptop back and phone the customer helpline to confirm with them that the laptop had hard disk failure. Smae day I took it back and they said they will send it off for repair.

I have heard nothing back and now have been without my laptop for over month.

How long are they allowed to take to repair my laptop?

Any information that you can provide that would be great.

Many thanks

Its usually a time you have to agree with them, at argos we say 10 working days, and if under extreme circimstances it hasn''t come back in 15 working days we will give you a brand new one (down to the manager btw, not written down in).

Go into store, ask how long it should take (a faulty harddrive would usually mean they give you a new blank one), which should take a week at most.

You are correct. Hard Disks themselves are simply swapped, as repairing them is very specialised.

It really shouldn't take that long. Most laptops can have their HDs removed without even taking them apart.

My parents once made me get a HDD installed on my old laptop by a technican at the cost of £20 (they even kept the old HDD), I got home took it out and put it back in again in about 20 seconds.

I could install a HDD on a laptop / pc should it be completly internal in less then 5 minutes (some of those screws are fiddly)

Also, you need a special screwdriver sometimes. However, it should still take a very short time.

No more than an hour to INSTALL a new laptop HDD - I did a fully internal one other day at work in 30 mins. But you then do have to add another hour or two to set the laptop back up with the software etc.

So maybe three hours work then, assuming they don't just leave the software reload to the customer...

  • 1 month later...

Your product must be returned to you within 28 days. If it is not, you can request a replacement product.

BTW - 28 days means just that. It includes weekends and bank holidays!

Cheers!

The Sales of Goods act does not specify a time scale. I had an issue with Currys in relation to my PC. A new PC that had meltdown within two months. One on site home visit and no repair fourth coming. The store claimed theat they had the righ to reasonably repair it. I retorted and accepted this had been given, now they must immediately repair refund or replace or i will isue a summons. I got a new PC higher specs and an additional extended warrenty. Shout loud and follow with letter. It does the trick with most compnaies. I also found adding a little line at the bottom of the letter cc The Consumer Action Group was a nice touch.

When informed that the call is recorded for training and monitoring I always say I don't want it used for training.

I always ask for the ICO registration information - they often dont have it, shame i never discuss my personal data unless I know they comply with the DPA.

Finally I always record calls and state at the start of there call. Although I don't have too.

Exactly that - it just says goods should be repaired within a "reasonable time". This is because this timescale won't be the same for different products. For example, a fridge is more urgent than a television - so a reasonable time to repair a fridge would be shorter than a reasonable time to repair a television.

The best thing to do with goods like this is to make time of the essence at the time of taking it in to repair - tell them that you want it back by [and name a reasonable date in the circumstances, it's no good saying you want your laptop back tomorrow!]. Follow up by putting this in writing. Then you have a definitive date by which you can say - you've not repaired this within a reasonable time, so I'm looking for a replacement/partial refund.
