Hello people, I hope this isn't inappropriate. We had to take our beautiful cat to the vet today after she'd been ill for a few weeks.

We're devastated, but have Pixie's sister and a dog and have to carry on. I don't know what else to say and hope this doesn't depress everybody.

Please forgive me if I shouldn't have posted this.

My best, HB

Hi, HB.

So sorry to hear about Pixie, I had hoped after our conversations over the weekend she might have picked up a bit. It's never easy and I know how you will be feeling. having lost a number of pets over the years myself.

They are like one of the family and are a big loss when they go, don't let it get you down too much I'm sure she had a great life with you and your family.

Take care and best wishes.

Scott.

Any advice I give is honest and in good faith.:)

That's kind of you Scott, thank you. We saw it coming and realised we had no choice.

Pixie and her sister were found outside the vets in a cardboard box 13 years ago and have been lovely pets. They went from alleycats to princesses within a fortnight.

I know Pixie is somewhere better as I type this.

Thank you for your kind words.

So sorry for your loss, HB. I've often read your posts on the Forum, and thought how kind, understanding annd comforting you are.......I just wish I could say something equally comforting to you now. Making the decision to put a pet to sleep is never easy, but it shows without doubt how much you love Pixie; putting her needs before your own. She's at peace now and out of her pain.

Hope you're OK.

Best wishes,

Janie

Hi Honeybee - I'm so sorry to hear about your pusscat. I know how how must be feeling - when I lost my lovely puss Ifelt as if I'd lost a good friend, which of course I had. You made a loving and caring decision - she must have had a lovely life with you.

Hello Janie. I'm very touched by what you say, as is my husband. Thank you so much. She's at peace now I know, and we're trying to take comfort from that.

My OH has a different way of dealing with the grief, but it's helping me to talk about it.

I really appreciate you replying, I know it probably isn't easy.

Hi, HB - just wondering how you & your husband are. How is Pixie's sister doing? I bet she misses her, too. When one of mine have been away at the vet, the others act really lost, then the missing one comes back and it's like "who?" They must love each other really!

Hope you're all coping OK.

Best wishes,

Janie

Hello Janie, how kind of you to ask. Life carries on as you know and we've been though this before. Can't say it ever gets easier no matter how many times you go through it, but you try to remember the good times. We did the only thing possible on Monday.

Pixie's sister is absolutely fine now, having not eaten well for about a week. She showed her consternation by staying upstairs while Pixie was ill downstairs, but that's some cats for you; I think she knew. Your cats must be more caring.

We're trying to move on and I really appreciate you caring.

Sorry about this HB. We all know, don't we, the minute that furry bundle of whatever it is comes into our lives, our heart is due for a bad break some years down the line. But this is what makes us animal lovers what we are and we carry on and do it anyway!

Nothing can be said or done to make it any easier for you, I know, but life goes on hey? Just think on all the good times. XX

You're quite right Jackie. [Nice to hear from you again, hope you're wel, btw.]

We're coming to terms with it, as you do, and know it was the only choice we had. There were loads of good times, she was very special. Thanks Jackie.

  • 1 month later...

Honey Bee, this is the first time I've looked at this section of cag, I never noticed it before. But I felt the sadness in your post, and just felt I needed to pass on my condolences to you, pets are like family and it hurts when we lose them  I hope time is healing this for you.

Life is like an echo, it all returns......The good, the bad, the false, the true......So if you give life the best you have, the best will come back to you.

Hello guys. I appreciate the kind messages while I was offline, sorry I couldn't reply until today. Jackie, it does the same to me when I see the thread title. Time is helping, but she will always be in our hearts. My OH says he thinks he can still see her trotting along after her sister, who is missing having someone to beat up and is trying to prove she's a kitten at heart even though she's 13.

With pets, the bad times are always outweighed by the good :).

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm so sorry you lost your lovely pusscat. Whenever I have lost one of my cats I've wept for weeks, months, and sometimes even years later I can still cry if I think of them.

When I was waiting at a specialist vet many years ago with my terminally ill, lovely boy, I opened a cat magazine and read the Rainbow Bridge poem. Here it is (and I've just cried again reading it).

I just can't understand people who can't understand that these lovely little creatures are part of our families.

Big hug,

Thank you Daniella, that's a lovely poem. And I'm sitting here with a few tears. You never quite get over it, do you? I'm sure Pixie's at Rainbow Bridge. I appreciate the thought.

I'm glad if it helps. People who don't love cats just don't understand. When my sister died suddenly I couldn't believe the number of people who expected us to take her cats to a cats home. As if..... :mad2:

My daughter's list of cats who get God Bless .. each night has eight on earth and seven in heaven, including the dying one we found in a neighbour's garden last week. I took the poor thing to our wonderful cats home and they called an emergency vet and put her on a drip for 36 hours but she was too far gone. She weighed less than half what she should have done, the poor, poor girl. She must have been straying for months if not years. :-(

A real cat person then? We had 5 at one time, but were down to Pixie and her sister, plus the dog.

I'm sure there will be other cats, but the sister has turned into a cantakerous old lady of 13 and probably wouldn't take kindly to another cat being introduced. She's still in denial about her age though, and does the olympics up and down the landing every day just to show us she's still a kitten at heart :).

The eight aren't all mine! They are family cats. The most I have ever had is three, but now I'm down to two.

One is an old lady too. She started out as the third cat and she absolutely loathed my big boy from day one. She was always fine with the other girl cat, so when my boy died they got along quite well. When the girl died I thought the third cat, now No 1 cat, should have a companion as she'd always had company. I was told by everyone to get a male cat around her own age, but I knew she'd just hate it, so against all advice I got a six month old female kitten, and she gets on better with her than anyone. The kitten was a timid little thing, and not at all confrontational, and when they are in the garden they are always just a couple of feet apart. My old lady is much happier now than ever. She grooms herself beautifully whereas before I was always tugging out knots, and the kitten (now four) has been a real success. :-)
