Hey everyone,

last weekend i bought a motherboard from micro direct as i was building a new computer, as soon as i got home i immediately realised bent motherboard cpu pins on first inspection, i am a regular computer builder and the damage was not caused by my self.

I went to return it and they simply said they wouldn't replace it as it was physically damaged and wasn't covered by the warranty, and pointed to a sign that said to check pins before leaving the store which i had previously ignored, they then said there was nothing they could do and for me to buy a new replacement motherboard.

are there any suggestions on what action i could take as it cost a reasonable amount of money, thanks

was it boxed or loose, when you say cpu pins do you mean the socket or did it come with a processor?

if it was boxed then you should be within your rights to point out that you had not had reasonable time to inspect the product

Here is a draft of a letter i intend to send them, again some suggestions on how to proceed after are welcome,

Dear Sir/Madam,

On Sunday 27th February, I bought an Asus P8P67 Pro motherboard from you for $120.42 that is faulty as some of the pins on the CPU are bent and it was picked up before installation of a CPU.

For your information, the Micro Direct reference number is PXXXXXXXX

I complained at your Upper Brook Street branch within 24 hours of purchase and as stated in your terms and conditions. I was told there was no possibility of damage being caused except by myself and then referred back to the manufacturer to quote for a repair.

This is not acceptable and I wish to reject the goods and claim a replacement or refund.

Please respond to my complaint within 7 days.

Yours faithfully

Assuming this didn't leave the factory damaged, very unlikely, they have either opened the box for some reason and damaged the pins and replaced it or this is a customer return they are trying to con some other poor customer into accepting.

i would drop a letter into the shop or preferably send it by recorded delivery informing them that they are responsible and that either the board is replaced or a refund made. Also tell them that failure to rectify the problem to your satisfaction will result in further action being taken.

Tell them they have 14 days in which to respond.

This type of layout makes it hard to damage the pins as in the skt 775 type so can't see how it was done.

it is a socket 1155 motherboard, and the pins are kind of flimsy. I have sent them a letter of complaint and see how it goes from here.

edit: this motherboard type p67/h67 has been diagnosed with a problem (something to do with the sata drives) and are being replaced to all costumers who bought one with a new one in april, would this cover me if i am not successful in finding a replacement/refund

thanks for the reply

  • 5 months later...

I work for a competitor to Micro Direct and see this happen from time to time.

We build around 500 PC's a month using LGA1155 Motherboards and have never recieved a board from a manufacturer with bent pins. We sell about another 500 Motherboards a month. Of these we fit the processors to around 250 of them. The other 250 board are sold without processor fitted. Of these 250 we probably have around 10 customers a month returning motherboards with bent pins.

The Motherboard manufacturers all specify that their quality control makes it absolutely impossible for a motherboard to leave their factory with bent pins. They also ship with a protector on the pins so it cannot happen in transit either.

In my opinion there are 2 possibilities here. Either the motherboard is a return from another customer, or you have accidentally bent the pins. I know you state you have not, but mistakes do happen.

If you paid by credit card you may have accidental damage inbsurance on purchases so it may be worth contacting your card issuer.
