After I had figured out the [problem], I found a website that encourages recipients to record and post the calls. ... It is very entertaining!
There are some interesting links on that Digitaltoast page which let us hear actual phone calls. It can't be much longer before listening on the web to a user's conversation with "officials" becomes more commonplace. Provided it doesn't breach a person's privacy this is something I eagerly look forward to.

Thought I would warn anyone interested of a new twist to this gangs [problem]. They are obviously not getting anywhere with their computer [problem] anymore so have decided to take a little change in direction.

I had a phone call tonight which followed the usual pattern, but instead of saying they were working on behalf of Microsoft they claimed to be from my local county council doing a survey. At quarter to eight at night, who were they kidding? My local council shut hours ago lol.

Anyway, apart from the time give away, they also claimed to be from a council that no longer exists. I know this because I used to work for that council and they ceased to exist some 12 years ago. Because of this I asked the stupid woman on the phone to confirm who she was calling from and she just hung up.

So, be warned, if you receive a phone call claiming to be from your local council just doing a quick survey you can bet your bottom dollar that it definately isn't them.

My husband was in the bank the other day and the person he saw when he reported the [problem] asked him how he had got on and said she had had another 3 people in the same week in exactly the same situation. This was on the news the other day and was warning people not to get caught up in it, so probably why they are trying a new trick.

My granddaughter emailed me tonight as the Company she works for has received an email from Consumer Direct regarding another [problem]. Apparently you receive a postcard saying there is a parcel to collect and asks you to ring the number and as soon as you get through the call immediately costs £315.00. Offcom are also involved so anyone getting these cards are asked to report it.

It's ridiculous that phone companies are still allowing these companies to debit you're account from a simple phone call. It's the phone companies fault that this happens and can easily combated by an automated message to tell you you will be charged for this phone call, the amount and press a button to continue.

This is a hoax as it's from something which happened years ago http://www.hoax-slayer.com/pds-phone-[problem].html

Or from the horses mouth http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org/media-centre/crime-in-the-news/november-2010-crime-in-the-news/crimestoppers-parcel-e-mail-[problem]-5478547 - note the time line dates

These certainly do seem to be raising their ugly heads again. My 80 year old mother has had two in the past week, but thankfully she is quite savvy and told them that they must be very clever to know there was a problem with her computer. When the man told her that they were, indeed, clever to be able to sort out her problem, she told them that the only reason they were clever was because she doesn't own a computer. They soon hung up!

I had another call from these idiots last week.

Told me to access EVENT VWR facility. I pretended to follow the instructions and then said my AVG system has warned me they are try to sc@m me and I must shut down immediately.

I was called back by a very stroppy supervisor who said I was lying about the AVG warning. I admitted this but said she was still part of a sc@m.

She replied by F'g and blinding at me in a manner quite extraordinary, considering English was not her first language. I told her she was a Potty Mouth and hung up.

She called back, again swearing like a cockney cabbie so I told her I was putting the phone in a cupboard where she could continue to swear on her own..........

............. 5 mins later, I took the phone from the cupboard and she was still there, waiting for me.

She said she wanted to prove she was not part of any sc@m and asked me to type in a certain web address which turned out to be a porn site !! She told me to look at this several times a day so my computer would be well and truly infected with viruses. I said I refuse to enter the site and was going to put her back in the cupboard.

And, with that, she swore once more and hung up. Amazingly, my computer continues to run quire happily.

8-)

As I am a microsoft certified profesional, I'd be asking them for their Microsoft certification number.

they come in format A000-0000 (A = Letter of the alphabet and 0 = number)

Knowing full well that this is an attempt to sell you a service, and they are just sales people... they'll try to blag a number... The reply then is "you're a certified toilet attendant? how does that help me?"

If in doubt, contact a qualified insured legal professional (or my wife... she knows EVERYTHING)

Or send a cheque or postal order payable to Reclaim the Right Ltd.

to

Click here if you fancy an email address that shows you mean business! (only £6 and that will really help CAG)

My neighbour's elderly inlaws have just been done over by this bunch. Being elderly and relatively new to owning a computer, they just didn't realise it was a s c a m and lost over £100 from their bank account.

PLEASE make sure that you spread the word about these dreadful people, especially if you have any friends/family who are new to owning a computer, or simply aren't aware that they could be conned.

Yes they are off and running again with the calls below is an email from Derbyshire Police warning about it feel free to copy and send out to people who may be more vulnerable to this [problem]:

[Reference: D1054 - Suspicious Tele Call Darley Neighbourhood]

We have had a report from the West End area of a resident getting the data cables providing their internet service into their house being cut on the outside wall.

Before the resident had realised this had happened they then received a call from what was described as possibly an Asian male who said that her computer had viruses on it and that if they paid £59.99 the problems would be fixed.

The caller has been very convincing, using the residents name and referring to the internet supplier. As a result the resident has given bank card details over the telephone.

Fortunately the payment was stopped after the resident contacted their internet provider and was advised that it was not a genuine call. The Asian male called back again later asking, probably as a result of the payment not going through, for confirmation of bank details, which the resident didn't provide.

Please do not give bank details out over the phone without verifying the caller's details and their legitimacy prior to giving any details.

If you require further information please contact (I removed Derbyshire Police number here)

Hope that is helpful

I,ve just had the 'you've won 2.5 million' call and all you need is to pay £250 shipping. Asked who the shipping company was and was told UPS. As I already have a UPS account I asked for the tracking number which stumped him, I carried this on for about 25 mins (nothing worth watching on TV) then the wife got annoyed with me winding him up and cut me off. Oh well back to watching Jeremy Kyle until the next one.
