It seems Sky cannot win whatever they do - and the following story from the Daily Record shows this;

Grieving son hits out at 'heartless' Sky over row to cancel dead mum's account - The Daily Record

Whilst you may side with the son - the issue remains, should anyone but the account holder (or legal representative) be allowed to modify any arrangement without lawful authority?

Taken to extremes, whether acting in good or bad faith, anyone can say the account holder is about to 'peg out' and to end the arrangement. What a hoot IF a joke, but how could Sky (or any other firm) protect both their interests and their customer.

One thing that does interest me, is that they (Sky) say they are 'legally obliged' to have evidence of a death certificate to cancel the contract. I've not seen this in their contract, and wonder WHICH law they are referring to?

If I was in a similar situation, I would not bring them into my confidence, and write as part of the discontinuance of all unnecessary services giving the required 30 days notice. This makes it very difficult for them to be pedantic about it. Playing them at their own game can save a lot of problems!

Sky can take into 'extinuating circumstances' when cancelling an account and if you are calling to cancel an account becasue the account holder has passed away you do not acutlaly need to send in a death certificate - they do it straight away unless they feel there is a valid reason to do so - which is very rare.

also just as a note to show why companies like sky sometimes take these actions -

Imagine if a young lad calls them to book, let's say an adult channel, and he cannot book it as he does not have the password or the authority to deal with the account - believe it or not - some of these lads will actually say the account holder has passed away to get access to the account -
