overseas debts

hi, a friend has been showing me your great site and i was hoping someone can help me with my problems.

 

a few years ago i moved to south africa to be with the man i thought i loved " my soul mate" turns out he was more of an abusive bastard who did nothing but cheat and lie with every single breath he took. i sold everything i had before i went, my flat, my car, everything. silly i know, i was 23years old, i should have know better.

 

not to bore everyone with the details, he used me. spent all my money with the promise he would pay me back. 2yrs along the road and it was all gone. he never worked a single day. i ended up getting a job to support us while his dream of being a professional poker player was his "big thing". never happened and finally i knew it was not the life for me. i came back to uk 10 months ago. finally getting my life back on track, i have a good job and keeping my head above water.

my problem is while i was in south africa i took out a loans and credit cards to help him and he promised he would pay them back (how stupid was i) he has paid a few months payments and now he has stopped totally. he isnt replying to my emails or txts. im scared of what might happen. its alot of money and i dont know how to get ahold of him, last i heard is that he moved in with another woman. he really is a sly bastard, i hope she doesnt make the same mistakes i did.

 

sorry im rambling my questions are,

can they chase me for the debts while i am here? do i write to them telling them where i am and ask if they will accept little bits of money while i try get him to pay? will they shift the debt to his name if he agrees to it?

 

im sorry to bore u all with this, but it really is causing me so much stress, i lay here every night wondering if they will come and get me or take what i have just worked so hard to replace.

 

any advice?
