Defaults really are a bug bear of mine, especially the way they stay on your file for 6 years. A lot can change in 6 years.

Personal data processed for any purpose or purposes shall not be kept for longer than is necessary for that purpose or those purposes.

The legal definition of necessary is:

adj., adv. 1) essential. 2) less forcefully, it can mean convenient, useful, or making good sense.

How can it be classed as "essential" that creditors know how my account was run 6 years ago?

When an account is closed and paid in full, to me that would be suffice that a default is no longer necessary.
