Hi

I found out today that my bank (HSBC) have levied charges on this months statement on my joint account that I share with my wife; of £125. I was so livid that I wanted to ring there and then and give them a piece of my mind, BUT then I remembered seeing an article on Martin Lewis' site and followed the links to this site.

What a REVELATION!!! I have just been back through my statements for the past two years and was stunned to discover that I have paid over £450 during that time...

I am now thinking about pursuing a claim against them for last 6 years and my main concern is that I have a joint account, 2 joint mortgages, my wife also has a personal account and a business account all with the same branch....

If I start this procedure, am I running the risk that ALL thse accounts could be affected or can they only close the main joint account that I am concerned with.

Thanks to everyone who posts stuff here, it is a fantastic resource.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your prompt response. A quick update, I phoned my branch manager today and he got a lackey to phone me back and after some discussion, they offered me £50 back!!! I accepted the £50 but also said that I would like a full refund of the £125 charge, I even said please!

She said that she would need to refer it back to the manager and they would write with the result. I said that if the result was not the full refund then I would pursue the matter further and we left it at that.

We shall see what happens next!

Thanks again for your help. :D

Hi

Just thought I would update you and let you know of my success!

Following the banks initial refusal to refund all the charges (£175 over Feb/March) I sent off the standard template letter stating that I would pursue the matter through the courts unless they did refund. This eventually led to a phone call in person from Phil Beaumont in Customer complaints department. Whilst accepting no responsibility for liability, he said that if I signed a letter that they would forward, then they would refund the £175. They sent the letter, I signed and returned it and Hey Presto! I got the charges back.

Thanks very much to everyone that contributes to this very worthwhile site.
