Hi,

I'm interested in how Verified by Visa is supposed to work. I'm in dispute with a merchant and I know that when I make a transaction with the merchant, the Verified by Visa screen is shown but it just 'goes through the motions' and doesn't ask me for any details. Is this right?

Thanks

Depends upon your bank...Nationwide use the service but dont ask you to sign up where as Natwest do use it.

Its hit and miss.

VBV is only for security to verify cards purchases etc... Not really much more.

Whos the company you are disputing with?

We could do with some help from you.

When I get a "verified by Visa"'screen it usually asks me for 3 characters (but also shows a pass phrase to confirm its a "real" VBV page)

I've wondered if it is susceptible to "man in the middle" attacks, but I digress....

A few times it looks like it is going to VBV but the transaction just authorises without asking for the 3 characters from my passcode......

Yes that's what I'm talking about. I'm wondering if the merchant has any control over this. Is it ok that I'm not asked for the characters? With Visa, isn't entering the characters how you authorise the transaction?

no entering your 3 digit CVV code on the back is

Barclays sadly don't use the 3 #Chrs of a password.

co-op do sometimes

Lloyds do .

nationwide do

not sure on the rest

so whats your dispute regardless to proving if/if not how you paid?

please don't hit Quote...just type we know what we said earlier..

Hi dx, thanks for the interest.

To be honest I don't want to detail it at this stage

- I've written a letter before action to the CEO so will see what happens with that.

I was thinking of this as a different way of resolving the issue.

If it doesn't work, are you intending to follow through on the LBA ? If not, then it was not a good idea to send it.

Only ever send a letter before action if you are fully intent on going through with Court action.

With the VBV, I bank with Barclays and have multiple accounts. When one of us pays via card, a long time ago it used to ask us for memorable data but has not done so for the last 3 - 4 years.
