Hi guys. Just a quick one.

I recently done a fresh install of an old Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop. I had a problem installing Drivers from Dell (Ethernet and Wireless Drivers). I have managed to eventually get them done and can access the internet. The problem I am having now is, if I download anything and try to install the program, It won't start. Even in elevated mode. The main issue I am having is updating SM bus Controller. I have tried a fresh download, and tried using Update Driver through Device Manager.

Any help is appreciated.

If all else fails, kick them where it hurts and SOD'EM;)

Thanks for that. Now installed successfully. Only problems now are, direct downloads won't start after downloading, and Windows Update just says checking for updates forever lol. I'll get there.

I can download from another Laptop onto USB. That works. But I don't want the owner to have to do that every time she wants to download something.

I had the same problem with my desktop dell.

Eventually I found a windows update that was conflicting with the wireless card.

I deleted that particular update and ticked the box"do not notify me again for this update".

Or do a factory reset and install the updates one at the time trying which one gives you the problem.

Search the internet, it won't be easy but you will succeed 😊

If the spec is good enough I would consider installing 7 or 8.1 at the least....Vista ...really ?

If a download once complete will not run try right clicking and run as administrator.

aha vista home basic and premium

have extreme issues updating once you have .net 4.5 install

just had the same issue with 2 old machines.

nothing I did got around it even fresh installs

its something to do with the MS update servers.

I popped another 1GB in to make 3GB

and put win 7 on it [both]

Windows Update just says checking for updates forever

if it still doesnt work, try clearing any temp files/old prefetch data first, restart. it worked on mine (win7 though), rather than taking hours it came up fairly soon.

there is also a kb 'patch' that might speed things up.

IMO

:-)

ok you got me thinking on my 2 machines again

still got one doing it

got it out and was playing till about 3am.

resolved the issue

the network card was only using IPV6

there was no IPV4.

nothing I could do would work

so uninstalled it

flushed all the windows update stuff

cleared loads of temp files etc.

then reinstalled the drivers from the manu site, NOT the windows one.

still working now

down loaded 192 updates dating back to 2014
