I have very mixed feeling about this.

The devil, and deliverables are of course in the detail not the tailored emotive headlines.

Human population is growing massively and immigration will happen.

What economies need to do is adapt to the new world we are in. This means huge levels (hundreds of billions) of investment in housing, transport, healthcare etc.

Austerity and tinkering around is not the answer to the problems being faced now. It will only get worse.

I link a lot of the issues together, as they are all related. E.g tax havens, inequality/poverty, war/terrorism, corruption/fraud, immigration, EU referendum/blaming institutions. Etc etc.

At some point, the various world leaders will wake up to the fact that over the last 40 years, a lot of mistakes have been made. You cannot run the current world economic system in a way, where 90% of the wealth is owned by about 5% of people. Somehow they have to spread this money around, so that you have more people who can afford to have a decent standard of living. When you have more settled communities of people, where they don't feel the need to migrate, you won't have so many issues. I am not advocating Socialism, but governments taking active roles in reforming their economies so they benefit most people and restrict greed,

What governments need to do is limit population growth EVERYWHERE.

Without that, EVERYTHING else is pointless.

What value restricting how many children those in your society have to ensure sustainability and quality of life, if others just carry on breeding and then demand entry to your societies land because you have more land space per head or wealth per head than they have ....

Its a worldwide issue and there is only one starting point - limit population growth.

I agree. But people have children to enjoy family life and to have children to look after them when they are older. It is the natural cycle of life, but is changing.

The biggest increases in population will happen in Asia and Africa. In many countries they will not have enough food, water and shelter. This will get worse as time goes by, unless action is taken. The current migrations might be seen as normal in the future.

I am a Socialist, because i see more of a role for government to provide many of the basic things people require and i would not leave it up to the private sector.

The best way, in fact the only proven way, to reduce population growth is to ensure a basic level of prosperity. Access to education (especially for women) also helps a lot.

I'm generally fine with immigration. I am, after all, married to an immigrant - although everyone is super nice to her and, in fact, don't really consider her to be an "immigrant" at all because she's a white native English speaker. But I do recall that a couple of years after she moved here, they introduced the £18k earnings threshold for those wishing to sponsor their fiance(e) or spouse to immigrate. Despite working full time, I did not earn enough and wouldn't have met the threshold if it had applied when she moved. And who was this renegade employer who didn't pay a full time worker enough, in the opinion of British Government, to support a childless couple? It was, er, the British Government. I worked for the DWP.

Yes.

Chicken and egg though isn't it, and population simply cannot continue to increase at its current rate, which would make education and prosperity even less likely and disaster ever closer and more unavoidable.

No. Are you?

Just as I DONT advocate cutting the hands off thieves despite my supporting policies and practices intended to deter thievery as a practice.

Well, we already have a reasonable idea what the population will be in the medium term - it will probably level off around 11 billion and then start to fall. If you have a spare hour at any point, this is worth watching. We have already reached "peak child" - the number of children in the world has been steady at 2 billion for a decade or so now. Even as the population grows, access to education across the world is expanding, and ever more people are being lifted out of poverty. I agree with Prof Rosling (in the video): this is a miracle unprecedented in human history. There are many challenges ahead, but we're showing that we're up to the task.

Yes, I have seen many estimates of what the world can support and how may people there might be in 20, 50 years, with extimates varying wildly depending on estimates of:

* The impact of improved helthcare on increased successful births and longer life

* The ongoing impact of the populations damage of our Worlds ability to sustain and recover from our stripping

* The impact of global warming reducing fertile land and the remaining fertile lands 'fertility'

Some consider we have already long passed sustainability.

Some consider the planet could support upto 16B in ideal circumstances where everyone did what they needed to and only took the minimum they needed, and all efforts were altruistic.

But all efforts aren't altruistic, and people do not take only the minimum they need, and wars, greed and waste continue at an ever increasing rate on a planet less and less able to support it.

So playing wishful thinking with the only place we as a species can survive sounds like suicide to me.

We should be living well inside what we think the planets capabilities are and population growth is alongside greed in being the great destroyer.
