Hi I wonder could anyone give me any advice please. A friend of mine took out a life insurance policy in 2005 which included critical illness for any children from 30 days old until 18 years old. In Dec 2015 her 15 month old only child was diagnosed with Leukaemia. She wanted to claim on this policy for her child only to be told the child wasn't covered until she was 3 years old. On checking other insurance companies they all offer cover from 30 days old. Is there any statute with insurance companies or can they all choose there own terms

She needs to check the policy. They will vary from company to company.

Hello there.

I expect others will comment, but I think your friend needs to check the wording of the policy document about family members. Each company will have its own policy terms, I don't think there is a statute.

She should also check the written advice she was given when she took out the policy to make sure that it matches with the policy that she has, to make sure that the policy provides what she wanted. This could be called something like Key Features and should also reflect what her needs and requirements were when she took out the insurance.
