Bad news if you are an arachnophobe: giant house spiders are probably invading your home at this moment.

 

The arrival of large house spiders, affectionately referred to by one expert as the “golden retrievers” of the spider world, occur every year - but they are nothing to concern Britons.

 

 

 

 

The spiders’ bite can be similar to a bee sting if the skin is pierced, but Ms Rind said this was unlikely as long as people did not antagonise the insects and treated them sensibly.

 

“The best thing is to put a container over them and scoop them up with a postcard and escort them out. The risk of a bite even inadvertently if you're in the garden is very small," she said.

Oh shoot!

I have no problem with spiders around my home but if I see one in the bedroom...death beckons. Spiders follow a trail and if they have been on my bed, they are likely to be returning the same way. Not in my bedroom! I'm only mildly phobic but I cannot handle one (money spiders accepted)

Cat loves them. Soft, moist bodies, and crunchy legs.

 

In some areas, large spiders are considered a delicacy, so get the deep fat fryer out and enjoy.

The spiders we get in the UK are nothing compared to other countries. In many back gardens in Australia you will find 2 types of spider that could kill you. Funnel webs and red backs. Then there are numerous other spiders that would give you a nasty bite.

 

You never put on shoes without checking them first and going barefoot in a garden is not wise.

house spiders are great, bite no worse than an ant bite. roaming at night, keeping the house free of other floor bugs, whilst not bothering its human host. long may they continue

Not so good for us arachnophobes......and not so good for the giant spider I saw crawling down my bedroom curtains just as I put my head on the pillow - it got squished, and had it been able to hide from me, I wouldn't have been sleeping in the room.
