Got a dirt cheap laptop from a company that has gone into liquisation. Unfortunately, this company decided to use Mcafee and Sophos as security. Even though I can log in as Administrator, I am having a major headache trying to get rid of SafeBoot. I have disabled it in 'Services' in 'Safe Mode', yet still it starts. I deleted a dll as suggested by the laptop to stop it starting, but that just ballsed it up. Had to do a system restore, but it still lingers. Any ideas?

OS Windows XP Professional.

Thanks

Does the laptop have an optical drive, and can you get into the bios if so look for option to boot from CD or USB first. Does it have the unlock code sticker underneath? If so you can install off any XP Pro Service Pack 2 disk A reformat and complete reinstallation of Windows might be the only option as that wipes all traces.

Alternatively you could try Linux. Elementary OS is good for older laptops.

We could do with some help from you.

It does have an optical drive, and I can get into the BIOS, but I have no disk. A reinstallation of Windows would be great. I need to find a copy of it. I would have to make sure that the disk had all the correct drivers for this laptop. I'm not sure what you mean when you say 'unlock code'. but it does have the product key.

Yes that is the unlock code. There should be a recovery partition hidden with the drivers etc on the hard drive, copy the drivers over to a USB stick
